Fly me veg growers

How’s it going?

My spuds are peeping through, runner beans climbing, cabbage and onions in, and other seeds germinating , plot was manured and composted first
We have no garden. Only thing we have got is some mint and parsley in pots on the terrace. Plus some succulent plants in pots.

I don’t tend to grow veg but like to have peas, potatoes and tomatoes in. I tend to grow flowers from seeds and have my marigolds, cornflowers, chrysanthemums and sweet peas all doing well.

My peas are showing and will plant my potatoes next week. I haven’t got any tomato seeds and are struggling to get any plants.

Lots of good things can be grown in pots on a terrace, tomatoes for example. But Norman is right they are hard to get at the moment

I have a lot of seedlings coming from Early Ornamentals next week for my baskets and planters. They will need grown on but I like doing that. 👍

Where I live the last thing I need to do is grow fruit and veg on my terrace. There is no shortage of fresh stuff in the shops.

Also, in the past the fruit and veg fairy used to deliver stuff to me regularly. Via free handouts from friends. From greenhouses where they could not sell stuff because the quality was not quite good enough. Or sometimes where the wholesale price was so low they did not bother selling it all.

You get to be experts in making courgette or aubergine soup etc. Then freezing it.

When you get a full box of one type of veg you need to pass it around to others as there is too much for you. So I am a fruit and veg fairy myself sometimes. As well as a receiver.

That is not happening at the moment due to social distancing.

Not veg, but many strawberries are in flower. I usually grow Tomatoes from young plants but will have to wait for garden centres to open hopefully on May 8th.

Tatties coming through well. Also in various stages of growth are rhubarb, tomatoes, peppers, beetroot, parsnips, carrots, aubergine, lettuce, raspberries, gooseberries, peas, leeks & various herbs.

Bb - Most of the fruit and veg I eat is grown locally in greenhouses. Within a few km of where I live. Most of them are grown hydroponically. In an environmentally friendly way. However I will give you that they are not classified as organic.

Updated: Also I will give you that we do not grow everything here. So some of the stuff I buy is not sourced locally.

My chilli plants are going well in my makeshift greenhouse. But my tomatoes are showing absolutely no signs yet. Possibly due to the fact i used a load of soil from last year mixed with what little compost I had left over.

Put a few rows of 2nd early potatoes on my allotment about 2 weeks ago,I,ve got cauli and cabbage plants grown from seed ready to go in anytime plus some broccoli that will be ready in about 2 weeks.
Then I,ll probably sow my beetroot, carrots, parsnips, lettuce and kale around the same time.
I actually share the allotment with my wife who looks after the greenhouse i.e.tomatoes cucumber and peppers plus she is growing the peas, climbing beans, leeks, onions, courgettes, butternut squash, sweetcorn, and a couple of fancy veg fennel and celeriac that weren,t a success last year.
Also got a few raspberry and blueberry bushes plus strawberries.
Need a couple of downpours as the ground is really dry.

Got an allotment, second year of having it, it was a right state and a massive plot. Got 7 very big beds sorted last year and have another six covered for over a year ready to be framed and manured for this year. Got a big nature pond really thriving this year. Have got the base ready for a new shed and greenhouse just waiting for the virus to clear so I can go and get them. Have a poly tunnel all boxed in the garage but think that’s a job for next year.

the fruit is all growing well, various types of raspberry, strawberry and blackberry and have gooseberry, jostberry and blueberry and rhubarb.

have a few things growing at the allotment, garlic, onions, shallots, leeks, potatoes and asparagus crowns I planted last year.

I have loads of seed trays on the go, various peas, beans and mangetout, types of squash, different tomatoes, chard, broccoli, fennel, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, aubergine, peppers, chillies, radish, beetroot, parsnips, courgettes.

still a learning process. We do no dig which I would recommend. Can’t wait for next year when all the hard work sorting the plot out should make things much more enjoyable! Not that I don’t enjoy it now.

have a load of climbers growing from seed but nothing is happening at the moment.

Very similar to us we are on our third year but second plot as a better one became vacant last year so done the hard work twice and it,s all systems go this year.We also do no dig and have had decent crops last couple of years.

We just covered everything with cardboard and dumped manure on it. The local farmer delivers a trailer load for 20 quid, well rotted. The only problem I have is rabbits, little *******. I’ll have to have another go at finding where they are getting in before I plant the seedlings this year.

the plot next door have chickens so we have rats as well. I ripped down the old rotten shed last week and found a nest....ugh.

Onions in doing OK, garlic planted in the autumn looking good, just put the brussels sprouts seedlings in this evening. Harvested rhubarb this afternoon and cleared the winter lettuce out of the greenhouse ready for the tomatoes.

Other stuff in seed trays indoors just starting off.

Some very impressive efforts going on here!

I have taken my first rhubarb stalks, spinach and leeks have overwintered and going well. Forgot I have corgette in too.

A lot of fruit around the garden gooseberry, apple, pear, grapevine (20 year old) peach, lime orange and fig in my open fronted lean to patio space and a good herb planter.

After swearing never again, I’m having another go at mushrooms 🤞
