Five criminally overrated bands (in your opinion) and five criminally underrated bands (also in your opinion)...

Hard to look past U2 and Coldplay (although the first couple of albums are decent) in the overrated stakes.

I'll add:
Pink Floyd (post Syd)
Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Underrated:
British Sea Power
The Walkmen
Modest Mouse
Tom Waits (critically acclaimed but doesn't quite seem to get spoken about in the same vein as Dylan, Cohen etc)
XTC (arguably the most creative post-Beatles band in the UK? Perhaps Radiohead aside)

I'm not going to bother with the "overrated" tag, it is mostly just personal dislike for large acts for whatever reason. No one likes the same music, if we did there'd be one huge artist and no one else!

But here are my "underrated" artists

The Coral - previously mentioned on here, always producing interesting music constantly changing and growing.
Chic - Nile Rodgers is such a nice guy and the Chic shows are just so good
Jason Isbell - US "Alt-Country" Little known over here but he is probably the greatest song writer currently working in any genre
Horslips - Should have been as big as U2, they invented "Celtic Rock" and were the first Irish band to make an impression outside the shores of the island of Ireland
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Aussie prog/jam band (I suppose) difficult to categorise them, they generate a huge output of recorded music and their live shows are mesmeric.

Overrated (as in the music media hype them up every time they post a clip on Instagram)

Radiohead - clearly influential band, but it would be nice if they looked like they were at least enjoying it
Billie Eillish - I don't think she's rubbish, I've just not heard anything from her that justifies the hype or is different to Lady GaGa/Gwen Stefani/Lorde etc
The Stone Roses - Living in Manchester, their 'vibe' is rammed down your throat in every indie bar. They were absolutely magic in the early 90's but time moves on, and there's been much better bands from Manchester since then that don't even get a look-in on the hero worship
The National - droning Radiohead rip-offs
Mumford and Sons - remember that summer when everyone went round in waistcoats and rolled up trousers pretending to like craft cider. Urggh.

Underrated
Oasis - You can hate the brothers, but I doubt there has been another British band in the past 30 years that has encouraged more people to pick up guitars and start playing (which, yeah, might be a sin in itself) and their 94-96 period wipes the floor with other bands from the era.

It's always a strange one this topic.....to me this question is more of a combination of the below:
Overrated = Which popular bands, don't you like? Or is it that you'd just dislike the genre?
Underrated = Can you pick some obscure or little known bands, that not many have heard of, or some which were not popular enough to make it further?

Bands being extremely popular, in the context of their genre (or appealing across many genres), does not make them overrated. You might not like them, but your opinion probably goes against the norm (others ratings who like that genre).

Some of the popular bands I like mentioned as overrated on this thread are:
Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Led Zep, Muse, Radiohead, Metallica, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian,
One thing about most of those bands though, is I mainly liked their earlier stuff more, and seen most of them sell out loads of festivals or be absolutely rammed when they were headlining.

Most of the others mentioned on this thread as overrated have maybe one or two songs I like, but usually dislike them as a whole, as they're not in the genre's I like.

There are quite a few on here I've not heard of either, but that doesn't mean they are underrated, it just means that to me they've not yet been popular enough to get a rating (possibly as they've not had exposure, as they generally would not be rated highly, by the masses). Most bands I hear first are from nights out, or through other mates playing songs etc. I don't try and find obscure bands.

Some bands that I just couldn't get on with:
Ramones/ Sex Pistols - Awful, but I largely dislike the genre, I know about 10 people that have Ramones shirts who maybe like/ know one song at the most
The Beatles - didn't see what the fuss was about, but I'm deffo in the minority on this :ROFLMAO:
RHCP - some of their singles are ok, but they've never impressed me live, and I've seen them a few times
U2 - one or two good songs, in the early days, but the latter stuff I really didn't like
Coldplay - a few great songs in the early days, but then it just got a bit boring for me
Stone Roses - Considering they were around 20 years, I can only think of about 3 songs I think are good

Its all about personal taste really isn't it?
One band can produce one of the truly greatest albums of all time to worldwide acclaim (DSOTM for example), and some will turn round and say they are overrated.

Not the case at all. Certainly not with me anyway. My overrated choices are basically bands who I cannot understand how they ended up so big and popular. I like the odd song but to me they're just middle of the road and nothing to get excited about. I don't dislike them, I just can't see where the hype comes from.

My underrated list are bands who are already extremely popular (barring possibly Manilla Road) and 'rated' in the scene they reside in but in my opinion should be making it onto mainstream rock radio stations etc much more often and basically receiving more widespread appreciation. If you take a look into the metal scene (which far too many are too reluctant to do as it's "jUsT nOiSe"), you'll find these bands (again, possibly barring Manilla Road) are household names alongside Metallica, Iron Maiden etc. If I just wanted to show off some obscure bands, that would have been a rather poor effort on the whole.

I don't get the Stone Roses thing, they have a few big songs (which largely did not chart well), but I find it strange how some Manchester bars push these more than some o the others. I suppose they were one of the first, but there were good bands before them and a lot of the best from the genre came after.
Better than pushing the happy Mondays or Shaun Ryder, that I really did not get.
Mumford and Sons - ok if you like folk-rock, but if you like folk-rock, just listen to the Levellers?

Oasis - DM and WTSMG are both undeniable classics, they will never be "overrated" because they did those two albums

Yeah, wasn't digging at you, but you "overrated" some of the bands that literally everyone I know has watched headline about 5 festivals each, and pretty much all loved (some surprisingly). Largely those bands even appeal outside their own genres, which is some doing. That's from Indie/ Alt/ Rock/ Pop types anyway.

Obviously, if you like metal and the heavy stuff, then the chances are that sort of some won't be heavy enough for you?

I'm not mad on most metal or super heavy music to be honest, less now than I was too, and definitely less knowledgeable. I know it's not all like this but I'm not mad on anything with the deep growl or screaming I just don't get it. Same as I don't see the point in playing the guitar as fast as possible, and as low as possible with ott distortion too, if it's not melodic. Each to their own on that mind (y) A few slipknot, Metallica, SOAD songs is about as heavy as I go now.

I could name maybe 10 metal bands, or 10 that have dipped into that, but I'd not heard of any of those you mentioned, probably as I don't even bother with "the heavy music nights" anymore, I will never get the exposure. A few are german by the looks of it, which may explain some of it. The only German one I can remember is Rammstein.

"Mumford and Sons - ok if you like folk-rock, but if you like folk-rock, just listen to the Levellers?"

I'll settle for Steeleye Span
Had never heard of them, but looks like they were before my time!

I just named the Levellers as the only band I could think of which had a fiddle, other than Sigur Ros...but that's not Folk :ROFLMAO:

Anyway, anything must be better than M&S.....although saying that I bet M&S outsold both the Levellers and Steeleye Span, and I've probably just fallen into my own trap.
