Fitting a shower ….

Good god, it’s a stressfull job..

From working out how to use the fittings provided with the shower bar and realising there’s no way…

To finally laying the shower tray and choosing a cement base or OB1 adhesive sealant and then getting the waste to fit after several successful dry runs with out the sealant..

I really should give up doing DIY it’s too stressful…

The next job is to fit the cubicle and get it all sealed…

Then to wait for the ceiling below to collapse in a soggy mess in a few weeks time… 🥴😭😭😭

Nothing to it. 😳

I did ours some years back and also fitted my son’s last year.

Don’t rush it is the key and dry runs.

Our bathroom has leaked on and off for years. Umpteen attempts by us and professionals (and hapless chancers) to sort it, I hate it. Might just stop washing.

I'd get recommendations from someone good to sort it once and for all, except everyone I know who's had bathroom work done has refused to recommend the people who did it. Seems like a trade riddled with incompetence.

Literally doing the same as you right now.

Plumbing anything upstairs is stressful. I’m about quarter of the way through a new en-suite and retiling job. The shower was particularly stressful 🤣

Best advice I’ve had is take your time and do it in bite size segments.

A few days after I put the new shower tray and waste in, but not the cubicle screens, I tiled and later grouted that corner of the room, removing and reinstalling the shower as I went.

Reconnected the power and water supply, then went to rinse the tray a bit with the shower hose when the shower solenoid failed in the open position. Water at full flow. Even switching the shower off didn’t stop the flow.

Can’t let go of the hose, as there’s no screen to keep the water in the tray. Can’t turn the water off, stopcock is downstairs. Can’t ask for help, they’ve all gone out…

And, sigh… 🤣🙈

The ‘take your time’ advice is one I’ve been doing.. not rushed anything but each new task has its problems.. I think I’m just full of self doubt…

It’s the en-suite I’m doing. Attempted to fix the bodge the builders originally did a few years ago but the cheap tray I fitted bit me in the ass and kept cracking… I tiled it last time.. this time I’ve used a stone/ acrilyc capped tray and bathroom panels… would’ve been easy if the builders had used set squares originally… I’m sure sealant will cover a lot of problems 🥴

I might have to put the house on the market and run away 😂

Oh man, you are triggering me here 😂 I had to remove and retile our walk-in shower upstairs after a leak made me think it needed re-grouting, only to find that the chancer who tiled our whole house during an extension build had dot and dabbed every single tile. And he hadn't even removed the old wallpaper before putting the 5 splodges of quick set tile adhesive per tile on, never mind not bothering to use a suitable adhesive or grout... Was concerned about the effect my removal efforts would have on the shower tray, installed by the plumber, only to find the only thing holding it in place was the mastic between it and the tiles 😲 Ended up installing a full unit with a 25 year guarantee after various other hassles and having the downstairs re-decorated on the insurance due to leaks. The wet room installed and tiled by the same plumber\tiler combo didn't survive contact with hot water for too long, and that was after calling the plumber back 3 times to level one of the sinks. We got a sound lad in to redo the floor in there, and he managed to get the whole tiled floor to fall the wrong way so the water ran away from the drain😂 that one is still waiting for a proper fix after I got him to just cut tiles in strips to form a 'tray' for me so we could actually use the shower. Whilst I could bear it, it took longer to scrape the water away than it did to have a shower 🥴

Had a new bathroom supplied by Tecaz in Stockton, their contracted fitters did a brilliant professional job. Just went and lived with friends for a week. Not cheap but stress free.

Yeah I get that. But I can do a whole new shower, en-suite with a vanity unit, new floor and full retile for under £4k and go on holiday with the difference.

It’s a pain, yes. But I’ve had quotes and I don’t feel comfortable paying that amount.

I hope the Tecaz stuff is good. I’m wary of them tbh. Only because some of the sanitary ware I bought has been so badly designed it’s almost unserviceable. To replace the WC inlet valve I have to remove the cistern. To swap taps I have to remove the basin.

Hopefully this is a me issue with Tecaz.

Had a few recommendations for Tecaz over the years but every time I’ve been in there I felt like I’ve walked in to a 1980s show room.. so never got as far as a Quick Look round…

Don't rely on the tiles and grout to keep the water out, moisture will get behind.

Have a look at this guy's videos.

I replaced our shower earlier this year, fairly straightforward. I even replaced all the upstairs radiators. Hadn't nipped a couple of pipes enough, so have 2 small dried wet patches to repaint downstairs ceiling. I hate painting nearly than I hate tiling (never doing that again). One thing I won't touch is the gas, I did replace a few parts in the combi to fix it but no where near the gas line.

I was never a person to do DIY but I love it now. I'm not a perfectionist and once the main parts are done, I get bored and never really finish it off.

I will have a go at anything and do most things in our house. I draw the line at gas electrics. 👍

My youngest son is a spark, and he does that side for me.

Electricity, you can’t see and it hurts. 😳😜🤣

1st shower today and guess what, it leaked 😭😭

Not too worried though as I know where, but I’ve gotta remove the enclosure and add some sealant in the uprights…

I’m sure it will be fine though…

I'm currently in decorating hell, paid a decorator 4 years ago, really good local reviews and far from cheapest quote - his job was atrocious and snagging list was a mile long.

Next time round I researched and did it all myself and made a rod for my own back as now the mrs won't entertain getting a decorator in. Trouble is bloke we bought the house off cut every corner going so every time you decorate a room for first time you've got to undo so many sins like no mist coat on plaster, walls need full massive sanding job, paint on paper etc
