In France, many of the towns and villages have firework displays at the end of the fete's and try to out do their neighbouring village. The village near us this year went with silent fireworks and still had the sky full of colour. I know animals don't understand the bright lights but taking the bang away could only help.I have 2 dogs, 1 of them is absolutely terrified of fireworks, just lays there trembling all night. I know dogs aren't as important as people and I read a lot of comments about the petition yesterday with people saying we're regulating too many things, why are we ruining fun just for dogs and I do understand some of that. The issue for me is how long they go on for and how loud they are, I know it's probably different based on where you live but they've been going off round here for 2 weeks now and pretty much from dark until 10pm since Friday.
I'd not really given it much thought until I was telling a friend from Finland about how terrified my dog is, she could not believe that we allow fireworks all year round, they only allow them between 6pm and 2am on NYE and if you plan to let them off between 10pm and 6am that night you have to contact your local council. I know that is probably a little bit too far, it would just be nice to know when they're going to be let off so that I can keep my dog inside and play rain sounds to try and drown out the fireworks(doesn't really work that well).
I'd be all for public displays only but I don't want to be selfish because of dogs, if they let the public buy them but maybe kept it to NYE and 2 or 3 nights around bonfire night then I'd be alright with that, I can plan around that just fine.
My wife went up stair with the dog last night, closed the blinds and curtains and this kept most of the light coming in. The dog did seem to settle with her.
