FINAL RESULTS OF BORO QUIZ - junos_boots favourite 90s-ish goals

Just to let you know we are busy selling a car. I will try to post my choices after I get home. Hopefully by 12:00 your time. junos_boots. Please do not send me the Mustoe answers early. Ta.

So glad Robbie has been featured in this quiz, thanks for that judos_boots, for me, Robbie is one of our best EVER signings, I rate him that highly, he went through the lot at the Boro, the lows, the high's, the nearly the impossible dream
Funny enough only last week I posted athread about him, which I have copied & pasted

Us fans were saying Robbie who!

Did Toddy when watching him realise what a player he was thinking of signing

On hearing we had signed Mustoe I remember going home & dialing the Boro fans line to get all the latest Boro updates, which included the latest on the signing of Robbie

Now we knew & were excited with the signing of John Hendrie, with his duels against the mighty Boro when playing for Bradford in our awesome playoff season, a young, tricky Scottish winger who we were buying in his prime, another goalscoring legend in John Wark, which unfortunately didn't work out, but Robbie

12 years of excellent service from Mustoe, many, many solid performances & some top drawer goals, who remembers that 10 game losing run we were on in 1995, coinciding with Robbie being out throughout the run, then on his return away to Coventry we stopped the defeats with a credible 0-0 draw, Mustoe was back

I don't think Toddy, or for that matter Bryan Robson, knew how good Mustoe was, IMHO, the best way I can describe Robbie Mustoes time at the mighty Boro, Bryan Robson had millions to spend & buy who he wanted around the world to try & make Boro a force in the game & what seemed with the influx of World class players & top internationals arriving at the Boro, all the millions spent Robbies role in the team was never in doubt & probably one of the 1st names on any managers teamsheet

Great Boro player👍

A scorer of some top class goals, I was there at Tranmere when he scored his 1st Boro goal in the league cup win, at Swindon when he scored his 1st Boro league goal, infact looking through those goals the Anglo Italian goal will have been the 1st one he scored & I wasnt there

I was at Oxford when we won 5-2 & he scored one of the goals on his 1st return to his former club, brilliant servant

My 3 choice would be

No1 - 7th March 1995 Robbie after half an hour gone smashes an unstaoppable shot from outside the box with the Watford keeper standing no chance, putting the mighty Boro 1-0 up & the way to 3 points with a 2-0 win

No2 - 15th September 1990, Robbie scored his 1st league goal when playing away at Swindon, his control in a tight area, chesting the ball down, going past his man then slotting it passed the keeper, a cracking finish on to an excellent 3-1 away win

No3 - 1th October 1992, running on to a Paul Wilkinsion flick on he chips the Spurs keeper to put the mighty Boro one nil up & his 1st PL goal, at this game too, we went two goals up then threw it away with a certain Nick Barmby, when coming on as a sub, scoring his 1st Spurs goal & their equaliser

1. Watford 07/03/95 An absolute pile driver, cutting in from the left to unleash an unstoppable shot from distance, high into the top right corner. Not even The Great Gordon Banks would have got near it. Undoubtedly his most spectacular goal in a Boro shirt (for me)

2. Derby 01/04/02 - This goal to me epitomised Robbies never say die, controlled, aggressIve displays week in week out, chased lost causes down, as he did here blocked the clearance with nothing on to suddenly win possession and in a flash place and smash the ball past the keeper to ensure another super away day for the Boro in Derby. Robbie was always one of the first names on the teamsheet, Mr 100%, A bargain signing, a true club legend for me, underrated by many in the game and on the terraces at times.

3. Newcastle 01/05/99. Typical Robbie goal. Receives the ball deep makes a run forward plays the ball to Armstrong, Robbie carries on his run toward the box, Armstrong plays it back, still lots to do, dinks it past the defender, evades the tackle and slams the ball past the keeper to put us one up at the time at Sid James. This was his trademark. He had a superb game that day and was instrumental in us getting a valuable point that day. Players like Robbie are unsung heroes. In the role he played, only Souness and arguably Boateng were better, I loved the Boat, but Robbies edges 2nd spot. If he was at a more fashionable club he would have had international caps imho, especially when players like Seth Johnson and David Dunn managed to get capped.

Mustoe will always be a legend in my eyes

A legend indeed coluka (y)
Hope your well mate (y)

If he comes back to play, or even appear, at Mikkel Becks charity game he, along with a few others, should get a very big round of applause
I wasn't suggesting Rav should get any abuse off the fans. I was just asking how Beck will get on with him after their season together - it was a bit of a cheesy comment.

I agree any player who appears or gives up time to appear in this game should be warmly greeted by everyone.

I can only echo what others have said about Robbie Mustoe. I remember when we signed him for around £300k an Oxford fan was asked to write a piece in Fly Me To The Moon. At the time I used to subscribe to When Saturday Comes and this Oxford fan was a regular sensible contributor, so I thought this should help me understand what to expect. The piece wasn't particularly complimentary and suggested we had over paid, the writter also apologised for the piece saying 'as a local Oxford boy I hope he does well'. The hope turned into reality, what a servant to five Boro managers and I am so pleased he shared in our 90s rollercoaster, what a shame he left a couple of years before the Carling Cup.

Looking at the goals Robbie certainly liked playing against Derby, Sheffield Wednesday and his old club. Interestingly (modern players take note) he always celebrated when scoring against Oxford.

(1) Watford 7/3/95 I had forgotten this beauty until I watched the Boro montage, but what a beauty
(2) Derby 1/4/2002 Was at this game, my first trip to Pride Park and the week before the cup semi final v Arsenal. Robbie's goal capped a great day out and it wasn't a bad finsih
(3) League Cup v Newcastle 1990 This must have been the first of his goals I saw. As others have said typical Robbie, steaming into the box to finish.

Someone in the FMTTM fanzine used to write about Robbie's red engine back in the day and that summed him up. He was like our own Bryan Robson - before we had Bryan Robson! As Col said at a more fashionable club he surely would have played at least once for England. Mustoe would certainly have to be in my all time Boro XI.

Sorry Juno, this was about Robbie Mustoe.
I'm a bit torn with Ravanelli. Great striker, but not Boro legend material unlike RM

Oky doky here we go.

1st Swindon - as an ex Oxford kad that would have made his day. Lovely chest down, dribble and shot.
2nd. I'll go Watford away. Driilred it
3rd. Wimbledon goal. I know it won't win, but any sentence that has stamp and delightful in there has to be in for novelty value

Think roger Thames sums it up - what a reward for an afternoon's work.

Claim to fame - his brother used to service our car when we lived in cartoon town (Carterton)
Hi, A favour please......
Please could you add some dates. Or at least month and year. So it makes it easier for me to check that I have matched the goals correctly. When processing the results. Ta.

UPDATED: I think i have worked it out now by running through the video an extra time.

So just waiting for an answer from Cardiffdaffs.

I will probably give it a little while before I start processing the answers.

The final player and I have loved doing this - will miss it:cry:

Craig Hignett 196 matches 48 goals (League 156 games 33 goals)

Song It’s them again – surely a big clue now (doing it today as it is last player)

video is Run DMC V Jason Nevins

He was signed by Lennie, midway through our Premier League season, making his debut in what I can only call a disasterous game, losing 4-1 to Oldham. We took some real stuffings on the road that year – see Villa and Chelsea.

He was always what I called an energetic player, he rarely stood still and scored some very good goals for us

He will always be remembered as the first goal scorer at The Riverside with his goal against Chelsea. Also remembered sadly as the man Robbo left out of our second League Cup Final squad, so that Gazza could play. He also scored the penalty against Chesterfield in the first cup match, putting it through a hole that somehow appeared in the goalkeepers stomach (Ravenelli had gone for a walk so that he didn’t have to take it)

He signed off in style with two goals against Oxford, that had many older fans (my dad) telling us about 1967 again and how none of this lot were fit to lace John O’Rourke’s boots as he got a hat trick against Oxford don’t you know.

He played successfully for a number of years after leaving Boro, very nearly taking Barnsley back into Premier League, before their money troubles really started to bite and also winning League Cup with Blackburn – Gazza didn’t get one of those! He also had a weird spell at Leeds where he signed, never played and then left for Darlington.

Returned to Boro under Karanka as a coach, but it wasn’t a harmonious relationship and has been doing the hokey cokey with Hartlepool for a few years.

I was never a huge fan of Hignett at the time, but then I know nowt – and looking at our team now, what I wouldn’t give for a Craig Hignett to be in there.

I found a compilation of his goals (nearly all anyway), but I’m not sure what the compiler had against Paul Wilkinson. No help from MFC today so I have listed the dates and opponents for his goals.

Very hard decision as some beauties all in there. Some great moves in which Mustoe finishes them off and some spectacular ones too.

1. Im going to with the Watford piledriver in March 1995 at Ayresome. Spectacular 30 yarder.

2. Love that Wimbledon Away goal At Selhurst Park in March 1997. Juninho’s fab little showboat flick to Rav back to Juninho 1-2 and then across the box for Robbie to slot home.

3. Home to Newcastle League Cup 1991. Fabulous drinble round the keeper and bang.

Thought about the Spurs goal at WHL. Whilst it looked like Wilko got the flick on from Morris’s cross it came off the defender’s head so as such it just fails to find my top 3. Also honorable mention to our win at the SoL in 1998 and thet great move to finish them off. In front of us as well. A goal to purr at.

Sorry, doing it on my phone and the dates are tiny.

Just watched over them again, like you gave me another chance to see them
Swindon was sep 90
Watford 95
Wimbledon 97.

Dog dirt

Nearly finished now. Just one round left.

Here is what junos_boots has to say about Robbie Mustoe:

Robbie Mustoe 123
Start off with his (crap) song – Gareth Gates, Unchained Melody

Paul Wilkinson - East 17, Stay Another Day
Paul Merson - Run DMC + Jason Nevins, Its Like That
Hamilton Ricard - Emma Bunton, What Took You So Long?
Juninho - McFly, Five Colours In Her Hair
John Hendrie - Michael Jackson, Earth Song
Mikkel Beck - Boy Zone, When The Going Gets Tough
Bernie Slaven - Take That featuring Lulu, Relight My Fire
Fabrizio Ravenelli - Puff Daddy and Faith Evans, I’ll Be Missing You
Robbie Mustoe - Gareth Gates, Unchained Melody

My top 3 goals

First an absolute screamer against Watford, it settled the nerves and set the Boro on the way to another comfortable home win. I don’t think he ever hit the ball with as much power and precision again – but that was still once more than most players will ever manage.

1st Mar 1995 v Watford https://youtu.be/Sc0QQ2zW9Pk

I then went for his second v Newcastle in the league cup, I was just about to head back to university with my Geordie supporting mate, who I mentioned in a previous post and this trip was much better. A lovely stepover by Rippers, then a very calm finish by Robbie meant we could lose second leg and still progress.

2nd Sept 1990 v Newcastle https://youtu.be/Gwdr2aRLa0s?t=35

Third, I will be honest here I say this had more to do with the circumstances than the actual goal. It was Robbie’s last ever goal for the Boro and at half time I had battled through into the loos at Riverside 2 (aka Pride Park) to find the floor absolutely swimming with urine. There was a Boro fan slagging Robbie off, saying if that useless piece of **** can score against them, then they deserve to go down, at which point he slipped and ended up covered. He was sat near me (not too close to smell though) and I spent the whole of the 2nd half in histerics as he whinged and blamed Robbie for every ill in his life.

3rd Apr 2002 v Derby https://youtu.be/U6fDk2B6NWY

Another goal I liked was all about Baird taking the mickey out of Newcastle defenders, by nutmegging them and crossing for Robbie’s first of the night

https://youtu.be/Gwdr2aRLa0s?t=7

Now we have the penultimate league table. It is everything to play for at the top and bottom of the table.

Craig Hignett for the final round in the quiz. At present I have no plans for tomorrow. So hopefully I will be at home at 12:00 noon (on 4 June 2020) to process the results.

Stay safe.
