Feedback on new site thread

Nice fishing.
Genuinely not fishing mate. I have zero history of that and I'm not starting now...it's a genuine question.

The reason I asked was I went on old site for first time in ages as noticed that Rob had posted something about James headlining a festival. I had not seen that on here. Just thought that this board would take over from old one sooner rather than later.

Based on various comments I interpreted that Rob hopes the migration will be over by end April. However I believe there is no clear plan in place for how this will be achieved.

Ok, ta.

Still think this board is a massive upgrade on the old one. Be even better when more active people on it. 👍

From what Dood says the issue is revenue generation from adverts. Rob has to generate some money from both sites while they run in parallel.. Then when this one takes over it has to pay for itself in some way. So the ads have to be right before the migration can be completed.

There could be a problem with that though, as if people know posters and posts are split over both sites, and things are being replicated then they might use both sites less, as a total. As in the sum of two smalls, being less than the old one large.

I post and visit these site a lot less, now that it's split over two sites.

This forum is much, much, much better but surely to get the best of ad revenue (or to lose least) the change should have been done over summer, or just done quicker. There are tons of things which might not make that possible though, and I might be way off the mark with the visits/ ad clicks. People might be visiting the same and clicking on both, the same amount or much more. It's not my business though, but if it was I would do it the way that was best for me.

i think i'll be giving this board a wide berth until the ads are sorted out - so intrusive on every platform (desktop, mobile and tablet)

it's a shame and i understand there are always teething problems but it's unusable for me as it is, so i'll have to stock with the old board for now

We have to have adverts - to survive and hopefully flourish as a business. The format of this site as opposed to the old makes it a little more difficult to site them. But they are not pop ups, or pop unders and do not float over the top when you try to post. But they need to be in view because otherwise they raise no revenue. But as yet they are not permanently fixed or positioned.

As mentioned above. From a user interface design perspective, if you want them to not intrude too much you need to place them on the outside of areas where people interact with the site. Not inside areas of interaction (like between the last post and the reply box, as mentioned above). They can still be clearly visible.

i understand that rob, and i dont begrudge anyone making a living, but the ads are huge and obtrusive - people will just start using an add blocker so your revenue stream will be compromised - if you have sensible/discreet ads people will be far more inclined not to use an add blocker, or at least white list this site. a massive ad at the top of every page and ads in between posts are message board no-no's

on a desktop all i can see is this...

i.e. a massive ad then 1 or 2 posts, it's looks terrible, not to mention the fact that i bought a shirt from this store so now have to look at fellas wearing sock garters FFS!

I can live with a big add top and bottom. I am used to it already. Just move the bottom one lower.

Rob - as yet, do you know how you are going to display the static stuff? If yes, perhaps it is worth putting a placeholder article or two there. To show everyone what it is going to look like when it comes into full use. With the adverts place there as well I would suggest.

Sometimes when scrolling through a thread, it will show the full box post from someone you’re ignoring. It’s an intermittent bug but it’s annoying.

I don't know how the content will look as we haven't started designing them OR working out how to fund them. The other site was old and falling to bits but it supplied an income - and that kept it going. Am a way off discovering a way to make this place pay for itself.
You might not be happy with the adverts, I know but they are the only way at present to fund this site and pay for the server and pay for anyone working on it.
