Been to Cabanas in the eastern Algarve, great little resort. Also Tavira is a good place to visit. Tends to be a bit quieter than the western Algarve. Easy to travel to by local trains, which are cheap and punctual.

Stayed in Alvor for a week about 15 years ago. Was a lovely sleepy fishing village with gorgeous beach. Every restaurant was spot on

You can get a bus from Airport to Lagos which takes about 1 hour 45 m. Dirt cheap as well. Much easier than getting train as you have to get bus/taxi to railway station and that takes 20 minutes.

Not much at Faro had a day and night there on way back from Lagos. Not many bars open during day but a few open in evening.
Lagos on the other hand is great.
Sounds like you had the same holiday I had in September. Lagos is a very nice place, but a bit far away for Faro and might be an expensive day trip, if you can stop over though it's well worth it. However would highly recommend Vilamoura which is just over half an hour in a taxi from Faro, I've been there quite a few times, beautiful marina, great bars, fantastic restaurant and a big beach.

Faro is great if you know where to go.
Behind the Eva hotel you will find a bar called the Anchor, a great little old fashioned boozer . In the streets behind this pub you will find lots of trendy music bars and food places that come alive on an evening.
Faro also has a fab beach near the airport a cheap taxi ride from the town centre.
Enjoy.

I agree with this. I went to Vilamoura last year - loved it. Walked along the Quarteira front too - found a few bars doing pints for 1.50 euro, and it isn't as touristy as Albufeira.

Get a train to somewhere else seems to be the early consensus!

I'd go with a taxi over a train. More expensive but the train stations are much further inland... so you'd probably need a taxi to the beach towns from the stations anyway.
