Historic vote in Beijing that all but rubber stamps the end of free speech in Hong Kong as they knew it. Laws to be imposed include upto 20 years in prison for anti chinese Poroganda as these will be tantamount to treason with the penalties to Match.

sad day for our former territory.

“ China's parliament has backed security legislation for Hong Kong which would make it a crime to undermine Beijing's authority in the territory.
The resolution - which now passes to China's senior leadership - has caused deep concern among those who say it could end Hong Kong's unique status.
It could also see China installing its own security agencies in the region for the first time.”

That last one is perhaps the most unsettling.

Well, for starters they only had 4 deaths from COVID 19.
But Hong Kong is really important to China. I suppose the question would be how much they would be prepared to risk that.

Rob there was talk that if the protests continued they would punish them
By building up Shanghai as the new Hong Kong for international trade financial areas etc.

Hong Kong’s status as an international shipping hub could be under threat, should China fast-track plans for economic integration due to the ongoing anti-government protests, analysts said.
While Beijing has never spoken publicly about the economic consequences of the escalating protests over the past two months, a widely shared view within China is that the central government should reduce its reliance on Hong Kong as its key financial and logistics gateway to the rest of the world.
This could result in mainland ports having greater autonomy in managing the shipment of goods into and out of China, analysts said.” - from south China morning post

They don't all view it quite as we do. I think a lot of people still feel one nation two systems will continue.
The last time I went there it seemed far cleaner and better organized than under British rule.
I still find it incredible that Britain did not do anything to make Hong Kong more Democratic until the final 5 years before hand over. Far too little much too late.

Do you know Hong Kong? I've never been.

Thatcher and Major tried on more than one occasion to introduce democratic reforms with universal suffrage. Yet it was opposed by Deng Xiaoping and a number of top CCP officials, yet some reformists in Beijing and HK legislators were in favour of it.

Not only are HK losing their economic status, anybody from HK who has been critical of the CCP faces extradition to the mainland and with a 99% conviction rates and existing concentration camps in the country, it is terrifying times for the HK people.

Taiwan will be next.

China is certainly maximising the Covid virus for their own benefit.

It's no wonder conspiracy theories exist.

They won’t touch Taiwan as comes under protection of us naval Pacific command.

it’s also protected in US law.

The act states that "the United States willmake available to Taiwan such defense articles and defense services in such quantity as may be necessary to enable Taiwan to maintain a sufficient self-defense capabilities".

They won’t touch Taiwan as the us has a permanent base now (and hence why it’s still pseudo independent) - with almost 300,000 us troops stationed on it and comes under protection of us naval Pacific command.

China has already began practice drills on invading Taiwan. They're sailing ships and flying jets past the island on a daily basis.

I can't see the US engaging directly in a war with China. Perhaps a small scale navy battle in the South China Sea or perhaps even implementing a blockade to starve China from resources like food. The fact that China is surrounded by enemies across its borders leaves them in a precarious position, but the CCP is that power and face crazy, I don't even think they care anymore.

Utterly predictable and horribly sad.. The lockdown in Hong Kong has made it possible to deploy these laws.
No public to demonstrate on mass, no problem.

Is it just me or are the dictators taking over? China peeing all over the one nation two systems agreements

With Trump, Erdogan, Orbán and Johnson around, looks like the days of democracy are coming to an end.
