....the first Class 91 to be scrapped, 91 132, is about to be cut up in Nottingham. Shame, under its previous number, 91 023, I often saw and was hauled by no. 23.

Three others also being stripped. A couple are being sold overseas, 91 110 will be preserved at the NRM.

For those who aren’t familiar they are the locomotives which powered the Inter City 225 trains between Kings Cross, Leeds, Darlo, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow from 1990 to replacement by the current Azumas last year.

I feel old.

East Midlands Railway are still operating 125`s - in the same livery as the previous franchise - East Midlands Trains - with EMR superimposed.

EMR have been given official permission to operate the remaining 125 sets, even though they do not comply with the requirements for physically disabled passengers and other health and safety obligations. The sets have the original slam-doors.They are due to be withdrawn in May this year.

There is, however a historical problem with the East Midland "Main - Line" - its mainstay are the Bombardier Meridian 222 DEMU sets, usually comprised of 5 or 7 coaches. The morning Sheffield - St Pancras is 10 coaches and the peak - time St Pancras return also.
The overwhelming sets have no buffet service - except a "trolley". Well over half dont have wi-fi or information screens, like the modern services on every other express main line in the country!

New Hitachi High - Speed Sets are due to begin replacing the battered old stock in 2022. The trains are being built at Newton Aycliffe.
Originally due for electrification, Chris Grayling cancelled funding, so the electric wires stop 64 miles from St Pancras at Kettering, with a 10 mile spur to Corby!
Due to lack of investment in signalling, stations, track - alignment, speed restrictions at flat junctions [eg. Trent] and poor infrastructure - average line speed is 68 mph!
London ot Leicester is the fastest stretch, with the 100 miles taking 69 minutes, but the further 27 miles to Nottingham - negotiating Trent Junction and the restricted section to Notts is 100 mins!
Derby is 132 miles from St Pancras, but only takes 98 minutes!

London to Sheffield is on average 140 minutes - for the 164 miles. Thats only ten minutes less than Kings Cross to Darlington!

The current configuration between Sheffield / Derby / Nottingham / Leicester and St Pancras was opened in 1868 with hardly any change in the line course or configuration since then!
It feels like it too.

Happy days.

I often wonder how the Japanese make such a brilliant job of their railways. Mind you, I hear their fares are very pricey (?)
