The Brian Clough statue was put out to tender nationally and one of the top sculptors at the time was employed on the job.
Vivien Mallock She had to agree to provide several maquette models first, then it is scaled up. The maquettes were used as insurance against future problems with the statue - this proved important.
But our first step was to ensure there were thousands of people behind the idea of commemorating Cloughie. It was advertised in the Gazette for ideas of how to do this. Then a committe was formed between fans, family, Boro, Council (and latterly fundraising specialists). It took about 5 years I believe from start to finish. Therefore you need to make sure you have a lot of support. The last VC statues outside the Dorman were fundraised much more quickly.
My thinking is once the two books are published everyone will be talking about George Camsell and then we can have a big discussion on the next steps. Should it be a statue, should it be another form of memorial, where should it be sited? (The Riverside never existed in his lifetime - is that relevant? And all along the way stay in touch with the family and their wishes should be central.
