F&@K THAT SH£T RIGHT INTO THE SEA!!
We drag out heals in the transfer window apparently chasing the likes of Greaves, Choudhury, Hannibal, Armstrong, Larsen, Riis, Gyokores.. THREE FIRST TEAM SPECIAL ONES ‘DOING SOMETHING BIG’ Talk about challenging the top six with talk of a Gary Monk like backing with a recruitment team pulling out all the stops. Tanking the first seven games in the hope of a perfect window. Were not far off Tony Mowbray scratching around for freebies after the devastation Gordon Strachan wreaked upon the club.
The squad numbers that Chris Wilder was looking to fill made sense when looking at our squad, the players that have left and us supposedly having one eye on promotion/playoffs..
7 Marcus Tavernier
10 Martin Payero
11 Andraz Sporar
The transfer window concerning these positions passed us by somewhat.. even to the point where it looked like we were only looking to fill the position of a defensive midfielder in on loan. Choudhury/Hannibal/Ampadu/Onyeka
Possibly Chuba Akpom and his numbers early door have laid waste to us bringing in another striker?
Then there’s Alex Mowett being spoken of as our replacement for Tavernier and McGree being preferred in his current number 10 role.
No more strikers? no more attacking midfielders? AND FINALLY a choice between Fabian Delph and Danny Drinkwater!
All of our eggs should be getting put in the Ross Barkley basket. His wages at Chelsea would have been prohibitive and no doubt if we had brought in Choudhury, Hannibal and Larsen it would have been a no go.
Oliver Abildgaard would have been my first choice, we were not linked but he did make a move on loan to Celtic.. a club that was also linked with Barkley. Whispers of Rangers and Southampton in the twittersphere do not concern me. I don’t think either one is going to offer wages and game time that would completely blow us out of the water and that’s if they are interested in the first place
To be told we are THREE players short after such a long protracted build up is a massive kick in the teeth for me as a fan. Wilder said ‘he had left numbers spare’ suggesting Kieran Scott.. who in turn said he was most interested the free transfer market.
7 Marcus Tavernier
10 Martin Payero - Ross Barkley UPGRADE
11 Andraz Sporar
Xeka is another midfielder would could chance our arm with.. talk of him looking to move back to Portugal may or may not true and again with our current financial situation whilst not over the top, I think we could manage to bring him in on a moderate wage.
Linked to the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Everton., possible out of our league if there’s any truth in those.
Still.. surly now is the time to push the boat out? Opportunities are out there to improve the squad beyond what our finances dictate during the window. No point looking at players that are not as good as the players we were in for or that we were trying to replace. Double down, save money.. bring in better players!
Now onto an attacking midfielder to replace Marcus Tavernier.. ON A FREE TRANSFER!
It’s not gonna happen is it. We’d be lucky to get Fabian Delph over the line and if Jonny Howson can share his elixir of youth secrets then Danny Drinkwater will be a good edition too. I remember being unimpressed hearing of Dean Whitehead only to be shown the error of my ways. He was superb!!
Both with a professional attitude and winning mentality could prove invaluable as to bringing y on our younger players. Bamba, Peltier and Taylor were great for us last season.
As for the striker.. I can’t see any further than Andy Carroll not to start every game but + Giles crossing = goals. A point snatcher and a game killer. Things might not be that bad after all!
