FA Cup final day tomorrow and not a mention on here- how far has the competition fallen

Mail Online......

Vardy, 34, will have played in all 13 FA Cup rounds come Saturday and continues to demonstrate all the energy of a 28-year-old striker in the prime of his career in a side edging towards Champions League qualification after the win at Manchester United in midweek.

Having been a central cog in the side that created Leicester City history in 2016 with their incredible Premier League title triumph, Vardy now sits on the doorstep of destiny again as they aim to claim their maiden FA Cup crown.

When Vardy steps out at the national stadium he will become the first player to have figured at every stage of the FA Cup from the preliminary round - five stages before the first-round proper - to one of the most famous club fixtures in world football.

It is just the latest achievement in what has been an meteoric rise for a player who made his Football League debut 25 and has gone to represent his country in two major tournaments.

FA Cup games for me were the be all and end all of football. Far more important than league games. There was excitement in the games, wonder in amazement when seeing the results in the Pink, looking for the giant killers and hoping for the big boys to slip up. Looking at the crowds at games that normally only attract a few people, even the gates at games between two non league teams doubled and trebled and were sold out. It was exciting and we wondered who would be on Match of the Day at 10.15 on the Saturday night. Money didn't play a part. It was glory, bragging rights that could last for years or generations even. KO was at 3.00 on Saturdays. There were replays and extra time, second and third replays and even on the odd occasion fourth replays. But the winner was the team who scored more goals than the opponents-not some nancy pancy shoot out.
We have mentioned on here before about the greeness of the AP pitch, especially under floodlights. Well it was a lot greener and lusher when we had a replay, especially if it was a "top" team. The atmosphee for a cup replay was always another 10 notches up.
So why am I ranting ? I didn't even know it was cup final day this weekend. I think that is a measure of how far the competition has fallen.
This article just reminded me of what the FA Cup meant to me

I absolutely love the FA cup.

I hope I am lucky enough to see us win it before I die.

I think our best chance was when we lost to West Ham. That was our best ever squad and time.

Really happy for Leicester. Got emotional thinking of or dreaming Boro can one day do what theye done. Unfashionable club winning against the big boys. A club run well and investing in skilful young players unlike warnock and his journeymen lump it style.. proves also some foreign investors are good. Also what a lovely great guy youri tilemans is. Very happy for him and vardy. To think our chairman wouldn't pay one mllion for hm when Mowbray wanted him. Gibbo is small fry now scrambling about for free transfers. ...says it all about our decline.

I thought BBC’s coverage during the build up was pretty good today, better than it has been the last few years.

First half was dull but second half a lot better, normally don’t care to watch the post match celebrations but it felt special with the fans back in, cracked a few smiles. Don’t think I would have if Chelsea won like

FA cup day was great as a kid the build started during the week and was even on kids sat morning TV.
Enjoyed today - as already said better than probably last 10 years

Sure was a good chance that year, but the best chance was Jack's year when we lost at Birmingham.

When I was a kid the streets would be deserted during the Final. The Leeds-Chelsea 1970 replay drew a TV audience of 28 million! It was THE big game for the country as a whole. Now, in a world of hedonic satiation, super this and massive, massive that, it's just another game. We need to up the stakes to restore the relevance of the competition. Do the EFA have the power to change the Champions League 4th place qualifier?
Agree, it was like a proper family day, the TV companies and governing football bodies, have firmly driven the nail into that coffin, even moving the kick off time....😒

I need correct you there it wasn’t the TV companies that moved the kick off time it was the fa as they wanted to be prime time.

This all started when manure dropped out of the third round to play in the world club cup, or whatever it was. It was never the same after that.

This again wasn’t Man U doing it was the fa chasing the World Cup pipe dream of 2006

They were terrified Man U would pull out of fifa shiny new baby and that Bayern would fill the gap all but cementing their World Cup bid.

of course we all know what ultimately happened but that was the fear at the time.

for a quiz question which team benefitted from Man U omission by getting a second chance.
