Ex-Boro players slipping down the leagues

I was at Farsley Celtic this afternoon and Jacob Butterfield was on the bench for visitors Scunthorpe in a sixth-tier game.

I like to see players who have had a career at a decent standard still turning out at whatever level they need to to get a game. I think Leroy Lita is still playing somewhere down the divisions and maybe Adam Clayton too.

Didn't Dimi have a game for Thornaby last year? Anyone else come to mind?

Back in the day our players used to invariably end up at either Darlo or 'Pool. I remember Neville Chapman playing for Darlo and of course our ex Ken Thomson and maybe Ray Bilcliff? were involved in the notorious match fixing scandal 1964 when playing for Hartlepool. The legendary Jim Irvine played for Barrow for a bit after being sold to Hearts and Ian Gibson ended up at Whitby Town after Coventry, Cardiff and Bournemouth

Stephen Walker joined Whitby Town in December after being released by West Auckland Town FC.

Luke Williams was playing for Ungmennafélagið Víkingur in the Icelandic third division last time I heard of him.

Wildschut is at Exeter.

Blackman is at Burton Albion, but I can't remember if he played in goal for any first team games.

Joe Bennett is with Oxford United, George Miller is at Doncaster Rovers, Rajiv van la Parra is with Almere City in the Netherlands, Harry Chapman is with Bradford.

Luke Williams is someone that I looked out for for quite a long time. I watched him play for Scunthorpe and Gateshead. I'd love to see him in the Icelandic third division. I think Jonathan Franks had a spell out there as well.

I was more shocked to learn Scunthorpe are now in the 6th tier.

I remember going to watch us play them in the league not so long ago. (Well, it feels like not so long ago)

Franks is a coach at Whitby Town now, along with Matty Bates. It’s possibly why Walker has ended up there.

Lewis Maloney is playing for Jonathan Greening’s Scarborough Athletic these days. I remember he made the bench once under Aitor, at Molineux. Downing came on and changed the game for us. I don’t think Maloney was ever involved with the first team again after that.
