It was the 16th of May 1967 and I could hardly breath.. We were going to Ayresome Park to watch our beloved Boro. . I had been many times but this was different.
We set off early my Dad insistent that it was going to be a huge crowd. I was 10 yrs old and my excitement was at the highest level I think it had ever been.
Down the Avenue into the village. The floodlights tantalisingly appearing and disappearing over the roof tops. Then it came into sight the statdium that was home to my team Ayresome Park.
The lights shone brightly and we met up with my 2 uncles Brian and Vic. They were as excited as me.. Dad was right it was packed. For a while I thought we were not going to get in. All I could see was a ring of light above my head as we queued , We moved forward and eventually the clicking turnstyles of the Holgate let us pass into the ground. Up the steps and into the crowd. Never had grass looked greener. The crowd was getting bigger and bigger and it was a bit worrying for an 10 yr old. I couldn't see the pitch now and I could hear some other youngsters were also getting a bit upset. My Dad lifted me and said stay next to the corner flag and I will come for you at the end.
Whoosh I was in the air and being passed down over the heads of the crowd along with a lot of other kids. We sat on the edge of the pitch and watched from there excitement rising because of where we were..
The game was a blur of excitement we got 4 goals they got 1 . O'rouke got a hat-trick and my hero Big John Hickton got the other. It was bedlam . Over 39,000 people were going mad. The ref blew for full time and we were up. My first promotion watching the Boro and the game that sticks in my mind the most, I was still dancing on the pitch when my Dad and Uncles found me and away home we all went to let my Mum and young brother know how good it all was.
I still think of Ayresome Park every time I drive near where it used to be . That game was nearly 53 years ago but I remember that day like it was yesterday. My Dad (Fred) and Uncles Brian and Vic passed away many years ago but the memories I have of them that day will stay with me for ever.
