European Super League to be announced tonight - 9:30pm

Germans say Nein.

A united front in Germany?

While we let that huge story from Tottenham sink in, here's news of an interesting development in Germany over the European Super League proposal.

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund have said they and German rivals Bayern Munich both rejected proposals to form a breakaway league.

In a statement on Monday, Dortmund chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke said that the members of the European Club Association (ECA) had met on Sunday evening and expressed "a clear opinion to reject the foundation of a Super League".

He added that the two German clubs on the ECA board, Bayern and Dortmund, had taken "100 percent" the same position "in all discussions".

Because they're chasing an NFL model. It will have the most money and therefore the best players. It will be a closed shop. There is no chance Leicester will become the next City as they will be locked out of this.

Lots of people prefer college football or the Canadian game or the XFL - but the NFL is really the only game in town as it has all the money and all the caché. These big clubs hold all the cards at the moment and Leicester looking good in a second rate competition won't change that.

You're right about consumers - but "non-legacy fans" want gifs of Mbappé doing flip flaps rather than the FA Cup third round. This product, which it will be, will be marketed like nothing before and while it'll likely be F***ing **** - it will have all the best players and the majority of global supporters.

This is why it should be made as painful as possible. Kick them out of the PL. Make international participation in FIFA competitions linked to participation in UEFA and FA competitions.

That might happen, but it's by no means a certainty. As I say it's a massive gamble.

I'm not so sure the premier league or champions League will necessarily be seen as second rate competitions. They'll market it to death, agreed. But they'd be the new kids on the block still. It's not the same as NFL v college football. It might even just split audiences between the two.

They won't even necessarily have all the best players. Some will jump for the money obviously. Maybe most will. But to be the best you have to want to win the best competitions. European Cups, World Cups etc.

There's no chance anyone in the game will recognise this competition as being remotely in the same ballpark as a sporting achievement as the other established competitions unless someone like UEFA caves and agrees to it. Which is partly why of course they want to have their cake and eat it and stay in the domestic leagues.

I feel sick to the stomach about this. It’s a criminal act.

Block21 imagine what it’s like for us older gits who remember being at Stamford Bridge in 88 at their crumbling stadium when we relegated the hooligans to the second tier ( oh and us getting promoted the same day ) . It’s sickening

All joking aside, I'm against expunging their records. Why should the careers of Fergie, Wenger, Shankley, Henry, Keene, Souness et al be blighted by the greed of some Johnny come lately foreign owners?
So we have more honours than them ! 🥳

Sorry couldn’t ignore joking . Seriously I’m gutted and that’s the last nail in ‘ elite ‘ footy for me . Thanks league football it’s been nice knowing you but it’s time for me to go my own way . Toodle Pip 👋🏻

Just reading that central government is unlikely to have any powers to stop this.
Locally though - the councils can intervene.
So, Manchester/Liverpool councils could refuse them the right to use their City name.

That would be fun.

Feel for the genuine fans of these clubs. Could really effect there mental health all this. I know how I would feel if this was the Boro and it would upset me as I would have to turn my back on them. I hope the fans get the support they need. Of course the owners don’t give a **** but the proper fans and proper people shouldn’t have to suffer.

Is this a wind up?

The problem they will face (and why they might not get the best players regardless of wages) is that the NFL model doesn’t include any international element. Players in American sports play exclusively for the American market and they don’t go off to play for their countries in separate international competitions.

That element of the game matters hugely to the ‘top’ players. They know they can earn a fortune playing in one of several domestic leagues, but always put their own country ahead of any club commitments.

If FIFA stick to their guns and ban any ESL players from international competition, I can see the vast majority of those players claiming breach of contract and joining other European clubs. The ESL clubs might still be able to sign players who have retired from international football, but it would become like the short lived North American Soccer League in no time at all.

Won’t their fixtures clash with Corra and Eastenders ? Simply unworkable and the British won’t tolerate it 😬
