Didn't realise Benfica bought him for 10 mill euro last summer and he has only played 17 times for them.

What a great bit of business selling him for over 100 mill.

He must be have potential to be world class.

Or Chelsea think they have found an FFP loophole and have lost the plot?

It is obscene. Disgusting amount of money for a player who had a bit-part to play in the World Cup and like you say a handful of appearances in a poor Portuguese league. Boehly in general just seems to have zero idea of a footballing model with longevity.

Whilst not the sort of person to wish bad luck on anyway, I would raise a wry smile at Chelsea Football Club imploding and finishing below Brentford and Brighton.

While they still have a £90m+ striker on their books too...

I will be happy to be proved wrong if this masterplan of theirs comes off, but they seem to have studied Man Utd's strategy of the last decade. That would be spending eyewatering sums on above average players who win little/nothing and just cause huge wage/fee inflation when the opportunity to buy a recognisably top quality player arises.

These Portuguese clubs must be in overdrive developing/signing good Portuguese / South American talent. They know PL clubs will come in and snap these players up for crazy fees .....thus making the clubs financially stable. Get em cheap, play them for a season or two - boom - sell them and the cycle continues.

Chelsea......in the last 6 months have spent £5m more than the entire Bundesliga combined. Personally hope all these players flop, the PL is not suited to them, and they end up financially ruining Chelsea. Absolutely zero sympathy if it all goes t*ts up. Scunthorpe - yes. Chelsea - not one bit.

Chelsea in January spent more than all the clubs in the top leagues in Spain, France Germany and Italy combined 💰

Its just like the Yank bloke sets his sights on someone and will pay whatever it takes. This lad got the award for best young player at the WC, i bet before that the owner had never heard of him but now he's like "Get me that boy!" and paid a ridiculous amount. It must amount to some sort of fraud how they can split the payment across the term of the contract but if they sell someone for £x they get the full amount onto their books immediately? These loopholes need closing.

Be absolutely hilarious if he flops. Was he *that* good at the WC? Personally I didn't think Argentina were that amazing even though they won it and obviously he won the young player of the tournament but still, ridiculous amount of money for someone who's played so little.

It's just gaming the FFP system but it didn't help them financially. They still owe all the money. They obviously don't care about being profitable (at least in the short term).

Personally, I think the whole FFP system is a joke anyway. It's not fit for purpose. It either needs to be removed completely so anyone can spend what they want or it needs a fixed value for spending that every club has to adhere to. Basing it on revenue is just to keep the big clubs at the top.

How can any club going up compete with that. Theyll probs break transfer record for simeone else in the summer too. Its going to a whole new level the bext few years as these billionaires compete with each other. Not good for the game in my opinion.

will be, how many of these 8 year long contracts have chelsea dished out?
I know its under new ownership but they have a long history of buying players and giving up on them 6-12 months later, with contracts like that no clubs will be interested in paying them off and they going to be stuck with players they can only loan out until the contracts run down if any of them flop lol

Disgusting amount of money. Shows up financial fair play for what a sham it is. Hope they fail.
not a scam, but you get to do something first then if anything happens its always at a later date, apparently they spreading the ffp allowance over 8 years and thats how they can do it, and this is being closed down to a max of 5 years if the contract states it so its only 15m a season for 8 years over their ffp allowance
