England team v Iran

Saka in the 3 behind Kane is OK though looking at the squad I'd have Foden in the 10 role... Mount maybe though Rashford is good from the left side... or Grealish..

I just think that front 4 is a little short on goals, other than Kane..

That team could easily be 4-3-3 as well so there's a bit of flexibility with it. Mount could drop into midfield with Rice and Bellingham easily.

England will be expecting lots of the ball so want options high up the pitch. Having Mount at 10 means England can play through the lines a bit better. Mount can take the ball on the half-turn easily and get England moving quickly.

Defensively Declan Rice is key, as he'll need to be on song to stop Iran breaking quickly on transition. I expect Iran to sit deep, get England high up the pitch, then attempt to win the ball back and break quickly against a disorganised defence.

Think based on that foden would be the first name on the sheet. He’s used to that week in week out, lots of the ball and teams sitting in
 
Sterling is not good enough.
We will squeeze out of the group, but playing Sterling will cost us any chance of further success. It is insane to play him.
 
Foden should start in the no 10 role and I'd be tempted to start Rashford ahead of Sterling.

No chance of Sterling not starting though.
 
If phillips starts, then i have lost all faith in Southgate. No way on earth should you be playing with 2 CDM’s against a team like Iran who will sit back
 
Foden started at the euros and didn’t set the world alight. I think the plan here is to keep the pressure off him a little and ease him into the tournament gently, maybe put a bit more fire in his belly and have a few days extra rest. It is only Iran after all. Sterling may be off form but he is capable of scoring against Iran and it might just change his form. The team that starts the tournament is rarely the team that finishes it so I am not too worried about Foden not starting especially as the PL only paused a week ago.

This team is “balanced” in some ways at least.
 
I'd go for the below, plenty of pace on the wings with Foden in the 10 role, I think he'd be dangerous in that role. Trippier will help keep the defence tight, although I'd bring Trent in if we are struggling. Grealish will always be dangerous late if they're tired.

Sterling starting isn’t much of an issue, his past record is great and he does the job for England, it may be time for him to share game time with other players but I don’t have an issue with him starting.

Bellingham however… we should be building the midfield around him and getting him tournament experience as a main man. Even a fully fit Phillips with games behind him should be a backup, no way should he be ordinarily selected ahead of Bellingham so I’ll be scratching my head if that’s the case against Iran, a team we shouldn’t need to have two defensive minded midfielders playing.
