England are through to the round of 16.

Must admit as terrified and nervous as I would be, it would be pretty exciting to dream about putting them to the sword.
Defo .. we shouldn't fear anyone in this tournament though I have been disappointed by what we saw in the first couple of games. See how we get on tomorrow, hope to be a bit more encouraged. We have the players to do the job, it would be a nectar tie to play Germany at auld Wembley and beat them.

Hope we progress further than just the next round after the group stage ..

Italy is the only team that seems really focused and a side to fear so far, to be honest. Otherwise, I think this cup could be anyones. Just hope we can avoid them until at least the final :ROFLMAO:

Foden will probably not start as another yellow rules him out of next game. Hopefully this relieves the pressure to keep everything tight as hell and we just go and play. Maybe we’ll see both Sancho and Grealish starting and perhaps Gareth slots Harry McGuire in as England go 4-3-3 or maybe 3-5-2– perfect time — almost like a bye into the next round.

Portugal were one of my top teams going into the tournament with that squad with Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Diaz.

Granted they were a bit of a shambles defensively, Pepe is old and Semedo is *****, but Germany absolutely put them to the sword, could have been 7-1.

For me if there’s one team to fear, it’s Germany in that kind of mood. Everyone’s raving about Italy but very easy group and they haven’t been tested. Belgium are so strong, France have the players. But Germany were terrifying!

England need a performance as much as anything. Going through is great but we’ve only played well for the first 15 mins against Croatia. Poor and a bit disjointed for the rest of it.

If we’re getting through any of the knockouts we need to figure out our best team and fast. There’s still question marks over 4-5 positions - both full backs, balance in centre mid and best mix of forwards, and it’s the third group game.

If they think a 0-0 draw is a setback (they do, but it isn't) then they haven't really been paying attention to the English nation team, in like, forever. A win tomorrow and Southgate will go level with Robson with 5 finals game wins, with only Alf Ramsey and SGE above him.

You could argue that Southgate has had easier sets of games in the big tournaments now the number of teams have been expanded so its not really a fair comparison.

Same point when people keep talking about the goals scored column in big tournaments. We put about 6 past Panama in the last World Cup who looked like a Sunday league team.

he failed to qualify for 64 and 72 Euros though, so Sven is the only manager to reach 1/4s in every senior competition he has managed us in.
Ramsey actually reached the 72 Euro quarter finals, losing over two legs to eventual winners West Germany. Poland also finished third in 74, so Ramsey's 'failures' weren't entirely down to our shortcomings.

Foden looks like he’s carrying a lot of expectation to me. I’d bench him and take some of the pressure off.

I've read this idea that we were poor against Croatia a few times in the last few days and I don't think it's true at all. It wasn't swashbuckling football but it was never going to be due to the way Croatia are set up and their experienced players, but we completely controlled the game and put in a professional performance. I don't think Pickford had a single save to make in the whole game.

Yeah really? I thought we were average to be honest, created very little. It was a dull game all round to be fair.

I guess that’s international football, every game for better or for worse will be analysed to death.

England will be under pressure tonight regardless of the fact they have already qualified. The press and negative fans see to that. If England lose tonight they will get slaughtered as well Southgate.

A draw would be a decent result in terms of where we are, a win would be great.

Hopefully Scotland can score that elusive goal and get to the knockout stage.

This stage of a tournament is all about momentum, it builds from the last game and carries you into the knockout stages. We need a good win tonight and for the momentum and belief to begin, then we can stop worrying about who we may face three rounds later and just concentrate on what's in front of you full of confidence.

'we'? I thought you were a Scotsman?

He didn't help himself with the hair, regardless if he said he just wanted a change of style, as soon as he done that I thought he might struggle
Yeah, I posted on here that it didn't sit comfortably with me, the media Euro 96 obsession is predictable but I'm not sure its remotely helpful and it looked like he'd been caught up in it. It nearly started so well though with that shot that hit the woodwork.

I'd maybe bench him then bring him on and see if he can find his mojo with half an hour to go or whatever hopefully while we're 2-0 up.

Agree, lose tonight and despite probably having an easier tie next round (unless Scotland beat Croatia) Southgate and most players will be buried before the next match.

Not so sure, in Ramsey's days you could argue that bar about 3 teams we were streets ahead of most teams.

Winterbottom, took some of the best attacking players in the world and lost 1-0 to the USA and we went home at the group stage, that's a 1950s USA who barely even played the sport.

2014, Hodgson's England bottom of a group including Costa Rica. Should we have been quaking at Bryan Ruiz and Joel Cambell when we had Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney?

You could argue that there is simply no way a 1986 England should fail to beat Morrocco in a world cup qualifier because morrocco only had about 2 players playing european football at that time. We actually finished behind Morrocco in a group! For all the great memories in 1990, he struggled to qualify from the group drawing with Ireland, and Egypt, EGYPT. There were no Mo Salah's or even Mido's in that team, and Robson failed to beat them and limped through to the next round.

Then there is Euro 88 where we lost to Ireland, Russia and Netherlands in the group finishing bottom admittedly that was a tougher group than where we are now, but Ireland, c'mon.

Southgate really hasn't had it any easier, Croatia have been a top 10 side for a decade or more, and Scotland are always fired up for us.

Yes, it's worded badly in wiki, but yes 1/4s was effectively the final qualifying round, we didn't make the finals tournament though.
