England are through to the round of 16.

Spain look poor, so second place is the way to go!

Before their match against Portugal, Germany looked poor too.

They were beaten 6-0 by Spain in November.
Beaten by North Macedonia in March.

I'd give us far more chance against Germany at home than France in Saint Petersburg.

If we beat Germany, it stops the bleating that we've not beaten anyone of note before it's even began.
We then have an easier tie in the quarter final than via the other route.

Yeah, either Scotland or Croatia could go through with a win. That game should be a cracker. They're both going to have to go all out to win the game.

Another thing worth considering is we could still finish 3rd, assuming we lose and one of them win. Not sure what our potential route to the final would look like then.
Croatia can’t come above us cos of the head to head.

If we play Germany, we will not beat Germany. They have had a hold over us since the 1970s World Cup....the first match I ever remember was us getting beat 3 -2 in the QF. Been breaking my heart ever since.

I can't see it being Germany. Think it's highly likely they'll beat Hungary and I can see the France/Portugal game ending in a draw, meaning if we finish top of the group it would be France.

Crazy to think that if Hungary beat Germany though, and France beat Portugal we would play Hungary at Wembley in the next round, then potentially Sweden in the quarters, and the semi-final and final at Wembley.

When you consider all these different permutations you have to think we're surely better off just going out to try and win the game tomorrow night.

See this is what I worry about. I know we should have faith and there’s a first time for everything but the likelihood of us beating Germany in a knockout feels about as likely as Johnson hosting a press conference to say that Covid has all just been a big joke and he can’t believe we all fell for it.

Another possibility.

But the scenario remains the same to me.
I'd sooner play at Wembley.

Personally I'm hoping the French hammer Portugal and send them crashing out.

England effectively put Germany out of Euro 2000 by beating them in the Group stages of the Finals. Its not at all impossible. Granted Germany were going through an awful phase at the time.

Wasn’t a knockout though. Yeah I know it was arguably as important. But then we didn’t even get through the group ourselves!

People always seem to forget that in 2010 we legitimately fought our way back into it from 2-0 down. Only a terrible refereeing decision stopped us equalising then being heavily in the ascendancy against them with the golden generation having finally found its long lost mojo.

Although we often refer to past England teams underachieving, I do think we've had some bad luck along the way with regards to players being sent off and injuries.

Of course the sendings off were justified but an entire team can't be held accountable.

- Beckham sending off in 98 vs Argentina.

- Rooney going off injured in the quarters at Euro 2004. If he hadn't I genuinely think we would have gone all the way and won the competition.

- Rooney getting sent off in the quarters at the World cup 2006. If he hadn't then maybe we would have gone on to win the game.

- The Lampard goal being ruled out vs Germany in 2010. The momentum would have been in our favour going in at half-time, having come back from being 2 goals down.

Was shocking that decision not to allow Lampard's goal. Wouldn't have been a problem these days but if that goal stood, the game was going our way. Our heads just dropped after, sadly.

I'd love it if we were drawn against them at Wembley this tournament.

Must admit as terrified and nervous as I would be, it would be pretty exciting to dream about putting them to the sword.

not forgetting the Sol Campbell header in jnjury time subsequently disallowed that would have beaten Portugal and lets go back to 1990 and Chris Waddle hitting the inside of the post and Gazza centimetres away from a golden goal v Germany in 1996.
