Am old enough and probably lucky enough to remember watching as a kid the World Cup final in 1966. My emotions even then at such a young age were up and down. West Germany scoring early on through “Porky” Haller Geoff Hurst equalising almost immediately and then Martin Peters putting us on the brink of a glorious win. And then it happened. The anguish that those pesky Germans can inflict on your psyche. A last gasp equaliser cruelly denying the celebrations. We went on to win thanks to a Russian linesman and a breakaway 4th but wind forward 4 years later and the Germans made me cry again. This time it was fatal coming from 2 goals down to win 3-2 after England had played them off the park for an hour. The catalyst was Bobby Charlton subbed off to save him for the semis. He had shackled Beckenbaur throughout the match and his absence freed up the Kaiser to reek havoc. He scored their first and ran the show after that.

We then went 12 years before making a World Cup again and yet again we played Germany in the second group stages as they were then. And it was that 0-0 stalemate that sent us out because even though we drew against hosts Spain Germany‘s victory against the hosts was enough to not only send them through tbut all the way to the Final.

The next angusih I was there to see. 1990 WC SEMI final in Turin in 1990. A game that etches on the memory more than any other. A game we could and should have won. Chris Waddle before ridiculously skying that last penalty hitting the inside of the post in extra time that would have won the match. Into penalties and German were clinical. Shilton got nowhere near their four penalties.

It wasn’t long before German next inflicted punishment on my mental state. 1996 and I was again present. Again we sparred, held them off and then could have won it. Gazza a hair’s breadth from scoring the golden goal that would have put us in the final. We lose again on penalties. Our own captain marvel becoming the latest of “the penalty missers“. Who remembers the winning penalty from Andreas Moller and the strut of celebration.

It doesn’t stop there. 2010 World Cup and we meet Germany again in the second round. We go 2-0 down but get one back and then one of those moments again. Frank Lampard Smashes the ball in from the underside of the bar and goes clearly over the line. The referee and his officials miss it. No VAR. Karma for 1966? Germany went on to beat us comfortably but that injustice was the talking point.

Anyway it’s about time we end this 1966 karma if that is what it is. We need to beat them. The country needs it.
Come on England.

Good pre match report from Henry Winter.

Surely this nightmare against the Germans in competitive football has to end today. Germany are a machine when it comes to tournament football and usually are able to grind out results when the chips are down. I have been listening to comments from some of the young lions and from Sir Gareth (which I am sure he will become if we win this) Southgate. He has rightly said this squad is not tainted with past failures and focussed on writing their own piece of history. He has provided just the right balance and tone with the media. I am sure they will be as well prepared as a team can be, we just need to play without fear and hope we play to our strengths. I will take a boring scruffy 1-0 again.

Thankfully, I think this squad are going into this game with the message from the public being ‘England hopes’ rather than ‘England expects’, we can do this it is just 11 v 11 after all.

I am fully expecting a very cagy affair after watching last night's games it's definitely not going to be like that. I am feeling 1-0 either way. Its absolutely almost impossible to call. I think both teams are so evenly matched.

I would rule out extra time. The key is every bit about the performance. I don't think we've really had a good performance yet? So we are either peaking slow or simply not going to take off. You have to say are so much better than we've seen.

I just hope we don't lose with a whimper. You can at least take more heart going out with a bang. It's just another missed opportunity otherwise. A Scotland type performance will see us crash out.

Don't worry about pens. I read yesterday that England have scored 10 out of 11 in recent pen shootout's. They were all pick a spot and go rather than this stupid new waiting for the keeper to go down..... Proper old school pens👍

I was lucky enough to get tickets and getting the train from Darlo shortly. I’m taking the old man, he was at the QF against Spain at Euro 96, I was 6 year old and have been England and Boro daft since that tournament. Can’t wait, Come on England.
Have a great day Joey. Referee tonight I see is a Dutch policeman.

Thank you mate, I'm praying for the right result.

My main concern is that England must be at or very close to their best to win, but Germany could play badly and win. That said, England must at some point start winning games against big sides. I hope we do it.

England 4-2 Germany

Switzerland and Croatia to a lesser extent have shown what can happen when teams go for the jugular. Switzerland were immense last night, high pressure, quick attacking play. France couldn't cope with them.

We can do the same to the old enemy.

Looks like we're matching them up and playing 5 at the back. Trippier wing back and Walker dropping into the back 3. Shaw on the opposite side to Trippier. Foden back in for Grealish. Rice and Philips in the middle.
