ENG v IND 2nd test

First series I’ve had chance to watch in ages and have thoroughly enjoyed it, but plenty areas of concern for England.

What’s our likely bowling attack for the Ashes?

Know the conditions have been extremely batter-friendly but have been a bit shocked by how unthreatening we’ve looked as soon as the new ball wears off in both tests. Jimmy Andersons don’t grow on trees but feels like we’re short of a seamer who can bowl with skill, and has a bit of endurance (though I quite like Tongue).

Seems we have an issue with fast bowlers being robust, which isn’t great going into the Ashes in Oz. Are they expecting Jofra, Wood, Atkinson, Carse to be the bowling lineup? So risky - if one of your bowlers gets injured during a match it’s basically game over, and all 4 have endurance issues.

In 1939.

England have scored more than 390 in a fourth innings three times in 150 years. None of those was to win. The highest ever England score in the 4th inning to win a test is 378.
It's been that kind of year though - Newcastle United won their first trophy since black and white TV so it would be fitting for England to revisit ancient history too.

3 out of:
Archer
Wood
Atkinson
Woakes
Carse

With Stokes as 4th seamer. I don't think Tongue gets a look in if Archer and Wood are fit.

If we keep serving up these pancake pitches its not going to help our bowlers stay fit.

Exactly. Tongue gets nowhere near the Ashes squad - and neither should Bashir- but I would worry if they take both.

I would say Carse should play at Lords…. He has bowled well at times without help from the pitch. There is a huge risk to go with Atkinson, Archer and Stokes as part of a four given injury records….. but those three and Carse would be my choice. I see little point in playing Bashir if the plan is to bowl first. That makes no sense.

Actually listening to Butcher on Sky this morning - Liam Dawson should be in the team, but they won’t happen.

Woakes record in Australia is awful if memory serves me right
His record nearly everywhere outside of England is poor. The only place where he’s even come close to matching his bowling at home is Bangladesh (and that’s only 2 matches).

However, you are correct, his record in Australia is especially woeful. In 7 matches he’s taken 16 wickets at an average of 51.69.

There was a good bit of joking on cricinfo when they said Stokes has just got his England players together and told them that this rain break means that they are going to have to put their foot down and raise their scoring raate for the rest of the match

England bowled poorly today after a decent enough start, coupled with poor bowling on day two. Definitely a rethink needed as not only does the current attack look toothless, they also struggle to give the captain any control. I imagine at least one of Tongue or Woakes will be replaced with Archer and/or Atkinson (if fit). I would be inclined to bring Jack Leach back too. I imagine they won’t change the batting, but Crawley must be in last chance saloon.

One of the biggest problems is the lack of a decent spin bowler.
Yes I get the Ozzie pitches don't tend to turn but sometimes you need an end holding up with accuracy. Bshir is shyte.
