🐙Cut your energy bills nearly in half with Octopus Tracker

All of it. I am not talking about this deal. I am talking about the process to find a decent supplier and having to wade through every offer to try and make sense of whether you will save anything.
Fair play, I usually find it fairly straight forward to do that by looking at annual usage and looking at what unit rates are on any deals and standing charges - excel helps a lot in that you can automate everything and just put in any new values to show the cost. I can knock something up for you if you like that you would just put in the unit rates and standing charges if any deal, you put your usage amounts in and it will spit out a price.

Currently there aren't really any deals because prices are so high - there were fixes previously but now it's pretty much a choice between this tracker and whatever the EPG are offering on standard rates

I think rates will have to drop a lot for any serious price competition to come back.

Thanks for the offer. I just don't think it's worth the effort for any savings I would make, particularly since I can't take any fixed term deals. I did spend a few hours going through all my statements a few months ago. Didn't find any savings anywhere.

If you have an iPhone or iPad, the below steps will create an automation to tell you the daily unit price for both fuels, looking at historic levels it's about 20-30% savings on SVR unit prices

iOS Shortcut to Get Daily Notifications of Tracker Prices

For anyone interested in being notified of tracker prices, there are 2 iOS shortcuts (which use the Apple Shortcuts app) that you can add to your phone and set up a simple automation that gives you a notification of the daily tracker gas and electricity prices.

Gas icloud.com/shortcuts/f5e2b9aa94964f4da0513b3ddaa4edee

Electric icloud.com/shortcuts/f3ce2ba605a34794b2a5d726f0d11d25

Once you add these two shortcuts to your shortcuts app, you can do the following:

1. Click on the “Automations” tab

2. Click the + at the top right corner and select “create personal automation”

3. Select “time of day” which is the first option

4. Choose the time of day (put the time as 10 minutes from now so you can check it works when done and then you can change it after testing) and how often you want it repeated - I chose 8am daily but you can change it any time.

5. Click “next” and in the search bar at the bottom type “run shortcut” and select it

6. Now you will see the words “Run Shortcut” at the top with “Shortcut” written in blue

7. Click on that blue font “Shortcut” text and scroll down the list until you find “Gas price tracker” and then click “next”

8. Toggle off the option which says “ask before running” and then select done

Now you can close the app and if you remember what time you set the automation to run, you can wait until that time to make sure it works and the notification of today’s gas price comes to your phone.

Now you can repeat the same steps above if you want the same automation for electricity daily prices.

By default, the URL used in the shortcut will not be for your region, there is a single letter code for each region, so you will need to open the shortcut by clicking on the 3 dots for each shortcut icon and edit the letter that appears before /daily in the URL to whichever region you’re in.

This is an example of the URL that you will see when you open the shortcut to edit it: https://octopus.energy/api/v1/tracker/G-1R-SILVER-FLEX-22-11-25-A/daily/current/

By default it will say K/daily in the URL, so I changed mine to F/daily as my region is north east of England (if you're in another region, google octopus DNO regions for your code)

If you're still on the fence, these are the gas unit rates from the last 15 days or so. EPG is about 10p a unit, so it's decent savings. Elec is 20-24p

Can switch away at any time so if they go up just come off it for a few days

Above link gives you £50 credit if you sign up. If you signed up already and didn't use a referral you should be able to log in and apply it. Even if you stay on the standard rate it's still £50 less than you would have paid.
There is step by step for the automation but i'm not sure how you "add" the shortcut?

Add the shortcut by clicking the iCloud link, then go to "shortcuts" app and follow the steps in there

If you get stuck let me know at what point and I'll point you from there

Is there an Android tracker similar to the iPhone one please?
I don't think so unless someone builds one - the iPhone one is actually fairly complicated in that it parses the URL and exports data from the page, sets up an alert etc. I don't use android so can't say if there is similar functionality to do the same, but the daily value is also shown on the page linked above, just a bit less user friendly

Wonder if there is a Twitter account that posts it that you could subscribe to maybe?

Got it working mate thanks.

The URLs didn't work as links for me, in the sense that you just click on them. But if you highlight the URL one of the options is to set up a Shortcut.

It's very clever (y)

Now I will use your link to Octopus.

Cheers.

👌🏻

Remember that when you join you'll join on their standard rate, on the day you go live just tweet them and ask to change to their tracker product

If you PM me your December usage in kWh from your statement and what your unit price and standing charges are I will tell you what you would have paid on octopus tracker, it's fairly quick to calculate

Any idea how long this takes if you email them? I switched and it went through on the 4th. I emailed to request a change to the Tracker on he same day but not heard anything back yet. It did say they will apply the tariff from the day you request, not the day they action it. Been too busy to phone them.

Also, bit dumb of me to not realise you need a smart meter for them to know what the price is each day. I don't have one so that would mean daily readings or I'm guessing average. Any idea what the average unit cost is per month compared to the price cap tariff? I've requested a Smart Meter but it says mine isn't eligible. I've asked them for the reason why it wouldn't be eligible in the same email I've asked them to switch me.

Much quicker to go on Twitter and DM them, they sorted it really quickly for me. They then send you the T&C's

This page shows you the last month or so of daily prices. Not a huge amount of flex in it at the moment so not the end of the world.

Make sure you have Novembers option selected

Two days in to my tracker I reckon saving 20% on my EDF tariff which would be £60 per month saving, well worth it.....

There was a time when I got my electricity and gas bills every three months. I checked the usage was about right on my meters, then I paid the bills. That was all it involved.

You try telling kids today that and they won't believe you.

Nowadays, thanks to the free market, they can spend hours a day tracking real time energy prices to desperately try and save a few quid so they can keep the Gastapo from breaking in their front door.

You can still do that if you want though? The supplier I just left billed quarterly and if you didn't have a smart meter you would submit a reading just before.

Spend hours a day?

Any more hyperbole 😂😂 it's literally an instant alert if you want to try save some money, if you don't you just sit on svr and do nothing.
