🐙Cut your energy bills nearly in half with Octopus Tracker

Messaged them on twitter stating I'd already been in touch on the 4th but not heard anything since, there not budging and won't let me on the tracker
What details do you have from the contact; did you email them, tweet them? I've seen people who have been able to confirm they had been in touch already manage to get on, so if that's the case I'd phone up and escalate it as you've got that proof you asked

I rang from an office building, have no idea on the number and they don't have any details of it either unfortunately ☹️
If you spoke to them there should be a way for them to audit who has accessed your account and when if you push hard enough. I've never worked for a call centre without that ability for fraud purposes. Be polite but just escalate it and say you want to raise a formal complaint as you thought this was in hand and as a result is costing you a fortune etc

I switched to Octopus and applied for the tracker tariff as soon as my account was live, which was the 9th Feb. They sent me a link to read the T&Cs, then confirm my choice.

Initially I did not get changed over. I complained, all via email, and eventually, yesterday, they switched me over and back dated it to the 9th Feb. They said that there was a six month waiting list but because they had basically offered it to me, and I had accepted, that they would honour it.

Did you get as far as confirming the tracker tariff and accepting their T&Cs? I think that is the only reason they accepted me.

Has the gas price rocketed today? My account isn't showing the daily rates but has it jumped very significantly?

Octopus are still showing yesterday's figures but the independent website I use is showing 15.24p/kWh. Could be an issue with the site?

Earlier this morning there was some sort of glitch with some sites that track energy prices showing over 15p/KW, which caused a mini meltdown on the mse energy forum, and Octopus were showing no prices for Gas.

Seems to have sorted itself out now, and price is what Linny said.

Correct if they authenticated you, which they have to speak to your account then they’ll recorded

If you rang up to ask about a tariff as a general enquiry then you may not have been authenticated

Thanks Vlad. I thought it was a bit of a steep increase for one day.

No more glitches.

Today's prices are: 23.65p kWh Elec
5.68p kWh Gas

I believe there is still a waiting list for the Tracker, but if you are on a Standard Variable with Energy Cap elsewhere, nothing to stop you getting £50 to switch and go onto their SV (called Flexible Octopus) and then going on the waiting list with no obligation to switch tariff if the Tracker becomes less attractive.

Anywhere, here is my link if you want to save a few squid (see what I did there?)

Today's Gas is 4.95 kWh, which is obviously less than half the energy cap price.

Still a waiting list, but the electricity only Agile tariff is still available which offers very low off peak rates (got for EV owners).

Is Agile Octopus cheaper than the Energy Price Guarantee?

As it's a very complex tariff, it's difficult to give a definitive answer on whether it can save you money and how much. It all depends on the rates you get, how wholesale energy prices are changing, how much you use and when you use it.

To try to answer this, we looked at the unit rates from the Agile tariff and compared them with the Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) rate for the Midlands region over the week of 13 to 19 February...

Under EPG you'd pay:

- All day: 33.83p a kilowatt hour (p/kWh)
- Standing charge: 49.15p a day

Under Agile Octopus you'd pay:

- Peak times (around 6am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm): 33.73p/kWh
- Off-peak times: From 10.74p/kWh to about 30p/kWh
- Average: 28.11p/kWh
- Standing charge: 45.07p a day

As you can see, the peak Agile unit rate never went higher than the unit rate under the EPG during the week we carried out our assessment – and its standing charge is lower than the EPG's standing charge.

And if Agile's rates were to rise above what you'd pay on the EPG rate for your region, you'll benefit from the discount on the unit price under the EPG. Though, as this is a fixed discount, you could still pay more than the EPG if Agile's rate is particularly high to start with. "

I was hoping to move to Octopus in August. Am with EDF and was really lucky as got a two year fix, costing me £105 per month and with the extra cash given back I have been getting £67 off that till end of March. Obviously, next month it will jump back to £105 but dreading that ending in August. Hopefully there will be some deals out by then.

prices may be lower but don't think still expected to be £2k+

You'll be able to join octopus, but will be at the market rate depending on any waiting list. I think it'll be a while until any price competition appears tbh

Benefit of the octopus wholesale tracker is the reason process drop is because of wholesale costs dropping so tracker will continue to get cheaper - it's below 5p for gas today, for example.

For now you're obviously better in your fixed rate.

Other advantage of octopus is referrals - between friends, family and here I've knocked off about £1700 off my bill so far, so with the massively reduced unit rates it's been a godsend.

That said; the predictions below only take us to the point at which we were at in in April 2022

Charged my car (20%-90%) for £8.31 yesterday on the 17p electricity rate. Can't believe I didn't know about this at the start of the winter.
I think the rates were a bit higher then but mostly around the epg rates anyway so you'd have been no worse off. It's now that whole sale prices are dropping that it's saving so much money

EPG rate;

  • 33.2p/kWh (pence per kilowatt hour) for electricity and 10.3p/kWh for gas, from 1 April 2022 to 30 June 2023
Today's octopus rates;
Electricity 16.2p/kWh (51.2% cheaper than epg)
Gas 5.16p/kWh (49.9% cheaper than epg)
I got an email saying I'm changed over, I was on flexible avro, now it says flexible octopus, but my rates are nowhere near as good as that, I've attached a screenshot

Contact them; this looks like a different tariff - you want octopus tracker - flexible just looks to be their EPG rate?
