Energy Bills from January

Does anyone know what is likely to happen to energy bills from January?

We got a letter from British Gas saying our annual bill is likely to be £1643 for Electricity and Gas after the October 1st rise. (from £1298)

Are bills going up again in January which will push the annual bills up further? or did the latest cap stop the January rise?

In 2020 were paying around £780 per year!

I think the new cap is in place for 2 years. So the forecasted Jan rise won’t happen now.

It has to work that way really, if it was a cap overall then it would massively benefit large users compared to lower users and therefore be a massive benefit to the well off. Also to stop people abusing it for crypto, grows etc

The down side to all this is it has been agreed on the basis that we can expect bills to be higher for a very long time so even if everything does get sorted out, they'll always be higher than they historically have been

I wasn’t criticising the cap; I’m just concerned about how it’s portrayed in the media and how people understand it. Or don’t!

My letter from E-ON this week has estimated my bill will rise £400 to £2100 annual even after the cap is applied and rebate credited. They will adjust the monthly dd up if required.

That sounds like you're basically a typical user from that as without the rebate you'd be on £2500

£170 a month isn't great obviously but better then the forecast amounts that were coming out

Ofgem will still issue a Jan price cap. It could go up, it could go down. It will be announced early December. It will not affect the consumer though. You will still pay the energy price guarantee rate.

Whenever I’ve read anything about it the article had made clear it’s a cap per unit and not a monetary value cap.

You can’t make people read beyond the headline but the information is out there.

We like to think to ourselves as the norm when it comes to energy useage - not a big house and just the two of us now living here. Hope everybody is getting these letters estimating what rises they can expect with their average winter useage.

Even now on my energy providers fb group there are still people coming off a fixed deal and kicking off about their increase to DD and how it's outrageous and asking if anyone else has gad similar. This crisis is nearly a year long now, and dominated the news for much of that, yet people are still finding out about it now.

I had EDF call me the other day , telling me I must increase my DD, I told them that I would not be doing that at all , I was previously paying £90 a month, and I,m currently paying £155 a month (initially was for 2 months to clear a small debit that came on last bill) and I,m happy to continue paying that amount , my smart meter shows my current usage during week days to be around £2 a day , on a weekend this probably doubles , so I,ll see how this progresses.

Got our bill yesterday from Eon, had to look numerous times to find what I was going to be hit for. Just tucked away casually in a paragraph was the new monthly amount........a reduction of £50. They took an extra £120 month when the cap first went up (almost doubled what I was paying) but I rode with it as I was expecting a £300+ monthly bill from 1st October, easy. Over summer I've ended up £400 in credit and this coupled with the £400 grant has thankfully brought the bill down ( still up £50 from this time last year).

Just have to hope with the cost of wholesale gas going down, the bill is at least the same come January and beyond 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

My joint fuel bill was £120 last month. BG emailed to tell me my annual bill will be £4500. Either they are extremely poor at maths, or they are trying to get an unnecessarily high DD out of me.

I'm probably considered a fairly low user as careful with my usage etc and just received my forecast for next year etc.
DD amount will go up slightly, but by the time you take into account the energy cap and the £400 credit, it works out I'll actually be paying about £20 less per month than I am this year!
I know somewhere down the line taxation will get this back, but for me it's a short term gain.

£2 a weekday and £4 a weekend is £260 for your weekend and £522 for your weekday. Trouble is that won't factor in your gas usage and you'll be using almost nothing now compared to winter, and you have to factor in the price increase in October as well compare to what you currently pay.

It might seem like they're taking the mick here but they are potentially just trying to stop people getting big bills

If you know your annual usage (this will be on bills), MSE has a smart meter where you put your current tariff in and it'll tell you what you will expect to pay in the new prices, you can split this by 12 and get averaged figure for the year

I suspect that it's much easier for them to collect money and hand a surplus back than it is to allow customers to underpay and then incur bigger overheads in chasing the money owed to them.

The MSE tool above is very useful. My bill would be looking at approx £10 extra per month, but our September gas usage is already over 10% less than September 2021, so it could end up being a lower bill with a milder winter and more mindful use of the heating by... other occupants of my home.
