Energy bills - don't pay

I've seen this website mentioned by a few people on here and I've also seen Martin Lewis talking about it as a growing movement.

What do people think about it?

I feel like something drastic needs to happen to reverse the tide, they are talking about 500 quid a month for the average bill by January. Where will it end?

They are looking at trying to get a million people registered on the website to put pressure on the government, it would be great to at least register on the website even if you are unsure about what to do next.

75k signed up so far, well short of a million.

I saw an interview with the chocolate fireguard head of OFGEM telling folk not to do this as all the energy companies will do is stick this onto the bills of the people that are paying - so they are not going to lose out on their already bulging profits. How true.....🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Serious action is needed, with a government who don't care, don't understand what the implications are to normal families and indeed the two charlatans in chief have f*cked off for the summer.

Happy days, eh? 🥶🥶🥶

This will never work in this country as people will pay making any gesture pointless and this resulting in those dissenters being prosecuted and blacklisted.

In France it would work but this isn’t France.

We all know how fast these movements can escalate on social media, I think in an ideal world something like this spirals and it frightens the government and energy companies into doing something before October.

I'm not telling anyone to cancel their direct debits, the thought of it frightens me because I don't know whether I'll end up owing them more money but if millions signed up to this site it might provoke a reaction. What do we have to lose?

Hang on, what point are you trying to make?

That we should all just shut up and pay what they want?
As h_m_boro has just quoted the head of Ofgem has already said that the bills will be put up for those paying.
Maybe Labour's policy of taxing the energy companies might be worth looking at....though this government won't do it

I agree, something has to be done. Lot of people genuinely can't pay so what have they to lose - nothing.

It needs someone higher up to do something, it shouldn't be down to customers to solve this issue. But at some point I hope people are going to say enough is enough, these companies are making billions in profit and working people are having to go to food banks to feed themselves. Its a total disgrace yet the majority of our population are happy to sit there and accept it.

This isn’t something I can get behind, I have a young family and the last thing I want is for my gas and electric to be cut off. I’m not sure what this will achieve.

For me its about putting pressure on the government and energy companies before October. Signing up to the website is better than doing nothing even if you don't cancel your direct debits.

I like the overall concept, but who's running it?

They've raised £18,000 in "donations" which they say are going to be used to print hundreds of thousands of leaflets...

They're also building up a email mailing list of potentially hundreds of thousands of UK residents private emails... which there is no GDPR statements or anything in the privacy policy to say they cannot sell.

I'm a web developer - anyone could have knocked this website up in a couple of hours.

I get that but people are going to put their families at risk by actually not paying their bills and risk CCJs and kids being cold.

It was 75k before they got loads of exposure on ladbible etc, it's now 80k

The thing is these are pledges. Far fewer than pledge will actually follow through, easy to say you'll do it but many will leave it to others

But still think all pointless. Will affect credit rating, may start proceedings to fit a prepayment meter, most suppliers aren't the ones making money so not sure why they're being targeted while people are still filling up their cars with petrol? Many ran by shell and BP etc. It'll also bump costs for everyone as well so it's poorly thought out. If it made a supplier go bust you can expect an increase in standing charge

Agree with above, so done will probably do alright out of this campaign, they can't really have much in costs.

Yeah I get that but I guess the individual concerned has to decide if thats a risk they want to take.

Many people won't have a choice and they'll end up with their kids being hungry and cold because they can't afford to pay.

It’s just a mess isn’t it. The world is in a bad place at the minute.

Not being able to afford to pay is worlds apart from cancelling your DD as some kind of protest though. There are steps energy suppliers can take for those that can't afford it such as payment plans. Most people banging on about this can pay they just don't want to as they feel it's excessive , and it is but that isn't the suppliers fault.

I wasn't clamouring to pay more in 2020 when my DD was £55
