End of the BBC

This board is full of music lovers, across all genres. This alone is worth your 43p a day

“BBC plays on average around 20k different pieces of music every year. Where commercial radio plays on average around 5k. Accordingly, narrowing of choice & opportunity would not be to the Music ecosystems benefit. BBC’s UK’s greatest ambassador”

I'm sick of people telling me BBC is a 'bargain'. Why should I pay for it if I don't watch anything on it?

I don't listen to podcasts or any BBC radio stations. I can't think of the last time I used IPlayer.

The only thing I have in my sky planner on the BBC is Match of the day. That's it (I've probably already seen the goals on my phone). I also like Line of Duty that comes around every 2-3 years.

So why should I pay for a service I don't use or could do without? It's not even about the money.

If you said to someone 'do you have netfix or amazon prime?' and they said 'no I don't watch them'. Yet they were told they still had to pay a monthly subscription it simply wouldn't happen. I'm paying for something I don't use.

I'd rather put that money into paying my Netflix or even better YouTube Premium (once you've had it you'll never go back with no adverts).

That said I don't really watch anything on terrestrial TV. That's fine as I don't pay for the other channels.
Why should I pay for your kids to go to school etc. Hasn't this boring tax argument been done millions of times. Wish people would stop moaning and stop being such tight arses. It's hardly a lot of money for the boomers on here.

Love YouTube premium. The music addition for me is better than Spotify too for content. The interface just needs cleaning up a bit. I watch more YouTube videos than any other form of media.

We'll just end up paying to watch via Britbox or suchlike.

BBC studios make content for others too, they make money that way.

BBC studios made a profit of about 100m which is a drop in the ocean I guess compared to cost of programming

Britbox is crap, and shared with other broadcasters. 500k uk subscribers so about £3m before costs.

britbox international is a 50/50 venture between bbc and itv, but Britbox uk is 90/10 in ITV's favour

.
which elements of your council tax and income tax bill do you pay for and how do you get a refund for those that don't apply to your life and budget?

If people don't have kids so surely I should stop paying for schools. If they dont own a car, surely a rebate must come from taxation on roads and infrastructure and those that drive or get buses can take out a Netflix style subscription so they only need to pay for what they use?

schools, elderley etc can just support their own content and private industry will fulfil their needs fantastically. Quality broadcasters like GB news will step up I'm sure
I get what you're saying. However, with Council Tax or Income Tax, I guess we all accept that some things we use and some we don't. It's within a basket of services though. The TV licence is a stand alone tax, and as such probably a bit easier to determine whether you use it or not.

an this is the sort of tripe we end up paying for..

the BBC as a concept is vital and very much integral to our national identity, with tories at the helm it's dead in the water i'm afraid
Yeah, this is an interesting point. I've seen the BBC slagged off on here so many times for being the government's puppet. Now that they're talking about scrapping the licence fee, people don't seem to want to think about it changing.

The problem isn't having a public funded media channel.....it's a lack of independent governance and ensuring that corrupt governments don't mess with it's impartiality.

I can tell :p :D :D
There are songs you can find on YouTube (in video form) which you can't on Spotify, but you can still add them to your own playlists. Got loads of hip hop 'mixtapes' saved that way for when if Zetland Radio ever get back to me about a late night hip hop and r'n'b show pitched to them nearly 12 months ago now 😢

The BBC is still the quality standard - but parts of the BBC seemed to be overmanned and some very well paid (NOT local radio btw) - e.g. 250 BBC managers @ Glastonbury Festival in the past - is that really necessary?

It's an enormous event, but for a short period of time, it's complex, technically, scheduling etc. I'm sure it's very justifiable and also very lucrative to the BBC as they will sell images around the world
