Emerson - 8 goals in41 appearances for us

The thread about TLF got me thinking about Emerson, what a waste of his talent the lad showed. His most productive goal scoring for appearances made was with us.

Checking his playing record the most appearances at any club was 80 odd, so never one to settle.

The way his career petered out was sad to see, arguably commencing after he left us - although he had started with us putting in sub standard performances compared to the exceptional form when he first came.

Very sad he failed to fulfill what looked like a phenomenal player.

A great waste of a supremely exciting and talented player. I seem to remember one newspaper columnist reporting from one of our losing cup finals of that season, saying something to the effect of "many young South American men have tragically gone missing over the years, but they don't tend to do it in a cup final in front of thousands of witnesses." Poor taste, but I knew what they meant.

He was an absolute beast, a really talented beast. He was a genius when his head was right. At one point I thought we had the new Graeme Souness, but with added flair, it turned out to be added flaw instead sadly. A crying shame for us, Brazil, football in general and himself most of all.

Came up very short against Veira, I was so looking forward to Emerson bossing him but it didn’t happen. Up to that game he was immense!

A truly class act. He was still supremely skilful and wasted very little when he played against us for that Greek outfit in the. uefa cup.

Loved Emo and like most, thought he could have been one of the best in the world.
You've got to wonder what goes through the heads of these lads who are so absurdly talented that the world is their oyster if they could just apply themselves.
Imagine Emo having the sort of dedication of Gary Neville.

One of the most frustrating players that I can think of. Along with Gaston Rameriez. Could have been great, but seemingly could not really be bothered.

Almost comically good.
I remember him signing and a big deal being made about his ultra-low body fat % (this was in the days this wasn't even a 'thing').

Seemed to have that Traore streak about him - loved the one vs one challenge so he could prove he was better.
Certainly didn't choose the obvious pass/route.

Unfortunately he took this 'creativity' too far at times.
Who can remember the game at the Riverside when he took a free kick by backheeling it to an opponent o_O

Probably the most gifted footballer I've ever seen play for us, at his best the best midfielder in the world, didn't last long but a joy to watch.
We will never see anything as good again

Fell out of love with him very quickly. I blame him for derailing our season in the early winter months with his stay away antics unsettling the camp and giving some of the media an opportunity to sneer at the area.

Whilst he stayed on a few months during our Championship season it was clear he wasnt happy about staying a second winter before hopping it to Tenerife.

Amazed he went to Rangers for a few months. it was even colder up there so no surprise he left them in no time.

I have no time for him. After all that happened in the relegation season after five seconds he blew the FA cup final that we’d waited 100 years for.

Phenomenal player when he first came to us. I remember Alan Hansen saying so on MOTD after his first 10-12 games, something to the effect, if he keeps up this form he will walk away with the Prem Player of the Year.

He was like two midfield players in one he was that good.
Sadly he didn‘t continue that way and let himself down badly...and us.

I thought Robbo showed really poor/weak management of him though, letting him go back to Brazil for treatment even though he would generally come back late.

I also blame him and Juninho for really poor game management in the Leicester Cup final when Rav had put us one up.

Juninho for not making the most of the fouls he was taking by staying down and using up time, Emerson for still spraying the ball around when there was just no need. There was an inevitability about the equaliser for me. Totally gutting but only ourselves to blame.

The fact that we still regularly discuss him, after nearly 25 years, shows the impact he made in the short time he was here.

In that start to the premier league season he was brilliant, One of the best I've seen play for us. Sadly though , He was a massive factor in our downfall that season. I was surprised when he hung around in the promotion year and he contributed a lot up until he was sold.
He could have been one of the best in the game and gone on to have a brilliant career, The fact he didn't pretty much sums him up.

That said and given all the disappointment.. what a wonderful time that was to be a Boro fan.

To be accurate there is talk about him occasionally. Not what I would say as regularly. We talk about Rudy Gestede more and he had no impact on the Club whatsoever.

The most talented player I have ever seen in a Boro shirt.
But, as many have said, we saw it for just a few weeks then it all went away....
