Elon Musk’s increasing obsession with British politics

I feel like the main political parties in the UK have failed the vast majority of the population, and the more they keep failing us then the more likely it is that we see a move to an extreme position.
The trouble with our democracy in the digital age is that it's easier than it's ever been to manipulate people's opinions using the media. Hence governments are tied in to having policies that are popular rather than bringing in policies they think are the right thing to do. And what is, and isn't, 'popular' can be greatly influenced by the media (and there's SO MUCH media now) so governments know that too many wrong steps or statements will lead to them being crucified and ultimately voted out. Hence they speak and govern with one arm tied behind their back. Trying to bring about improvements with one eye on not upsetting the most powerful/influential people who have the power to influence voters against them. Some of the media influence is nefarious, some is just the idiots on BBC Breakfast news and the like, trying to bully politicians into saying something in their interview that gives them a headline as what seems to pass as political journalism now.

Looks like Labour are going to be crucified at every step until they lose the next election because some of their policies mean that wealthy people are being asked to contribute more. All very depressing really. My only hope is that it's all just 'digital media' noise and it won't translate to ballot box but I've seen it with my own eyes (even in my own family) and the way Facebook or digital 'news' apps can get people riled up against the EU, heat allowance, inheritance tax etc. even if it doesn't actually impact them. The Cambridge Analytica stuff is also well documented. And that's before you even start with influence from Russia and China!

But who knows, maybe I'm the one being manipulated by the left-wing media and Trump, Musk, Braverman, Farage, Clarkson et al. are the good guys.

Excellent post.

We are bound to be influenced by the media but they do stupid things and don’t always get it right.

They tried to do a complete job on Starmer and Rayner before the election and bulled up Rishi massively and were devastated when most people ignored them.

Ordinary people have an instinct as to the way things are, they won’t be fooled by the manipulative wealthy media men all of the time, maybe only when it suits them…

There is a democracy and the current government right now is removing some landowner inheritance tax breaks.

I haven’t seen much hysterical reaction to it other than the media.

At work nobody has even mentioned it.

I think it’s popular otherwise we would have seen loads of opinion polls saying how the public were against it.
No, there is no true democracy whilst the establishment are able to sway public opinion by using the vast wealth and apparatus of their status to skew public perception of what benefits them.

See Brexit. See Thatchers government and the whole sale sell off of public assets and dismantling of the unions. Look at the myths that persist, Corbyn is an anti-Semite, Corbyn is a communist, Keir enabled Saville, 2 Tier Kier, the lies propagated over Covid, Hillsbrough, Orgreave etc.

The establishment have, do and will always subvert democracy and the best interests of the masses. It goes back centuries.

Yes but they want you (and me and everyone else) to give up, stop voting, stop caring and then they will be able to do what they want.

Even a Labour government just now and again acts as a big threat to them and the way they want it.

Never let them grind you down, life has always been a struggle against the rich.

I'm fully committed to the cause, I have no reservations of what the right and the establishment represent. I will always vote and it probably always be Labour until a more socialist alternative is feasible.

I fully accept that Labour have had to move to the centre to stand a chance of being remotely palatable to the electorate BUT that is always going to be the case whilst the establishment unfairly prejudice our democracy.

And unfortunately as terrible and biased as the mainstream media can be, it’s now being dwarfed by the likes of Joe Rogan’s podcast which is even less reliable and more irresponsible. His interview with Trump has over 50m views on YouTube alone, and that’s before you factor in spotify streams etc.

The reach he has is simply frightening and more and more people are now pointing to him as a legitimate source of information. If you’ve ever watched an episode you would know that very little fact checking goes on and Rogan has a propensity to just believe anything he’s told which results in huge amounts of misinformation being spread.

My daughter’s studying politics at university and is convinced (American YouTuber) Mr Beast will be President one day. He has more followers than Taylor Swift so his reach is massive. Makes sense really. They’ve had the movie star (Reagan), the TV star (Trump) so a YouTube star is the next logical step.

My mate has just said the line "Starmer isn't much better than Putin" and he's a very Americanised online type who loves Elon Musk, so that's the sort of nonsense that people are picking up from him.

The irony that he’s picked that up from the bloke who has been sucking the farts out of the backside of Trump who has been in direct contact with Putin this month.

Probably just a Tory.

I mean, in fairness, I slagged off the Tories for 14 years, you can’t please everybody all of the time.

I may be wrong but I think all this extremist media stuff will come and go, people will get bored with it like they got bored of the newspapers.

It couldn’t be anymore obvious what game he’s playing. I just pray the people of this country don’t buy into his nonsense like the Americans did or else I think I might lose what little hope I have left for us.
I think Musk is right to be fair. Conservatives messed up...Labour will mess up too. A new dawn of politicians from a new party is on the horizon. Glad I'll be out of the country by then.

Elonia is becoming more crazed by the day. Not sure if being lodged that far up Trumps @rse has rotted his brain or he is just as much a brat as the Orange man child. I see he has issued warnings that if you call him Elonia or diss him in any way on twitter you get banned. So much for free speech -only if it agrees with his opinion it seems. Glad I don't use the cess pit

And what is their plan?

Er let me guess..

Deportation of people they don’t like
Jail for trade union leaders and other leftie troublemakers.
No taxes for farmers or businesses, only for workers.
Insurance based health service (graded by how much you can pay).
Toll roads
Electric vehicle ban
Privatised bin collections
Public services privatised.
Street lights off after 10.30pm
No workers rights
No minimum wage

Complete capitalist free for all?

Far right fantasy land.
