'Elite Sport' being outside Covid restrictions.....

Can this go on?

Seems to be outbreaks at many clubs now, is football more important than squad members maybe infecting / killing elderly relatives or vulnerable kids etc?

Is it inevitable it will have to stop?

The start of a mid-season / winter break maybe?

I wouldn't be surprised.

However as long as all clubs/players/officials follow the lockdown then you'd think cases should drop right off in a couple of weeks?

Maybe if they're serious about continuing all players should be moved into isolation (eg we could move the first team squad into rockcliffe) for the next 6 weeks. Cricketers managed it.

I think the NBA did the same didn't they? Moved into a 'biosphere' or something where all the team were with the same bubble?

Makes sense doesn't it? Particularly at premier league level where they easily have the facilities and/or resources to do it.

Cricket do a full on bio bubble. They meet up and get tested then don't see anyone for 4-6 weeks.

This clearly isn't really possible for footballers as its a long season. Also the PFA would probably bring up human rights or something.

If professional sportsmen are effectively being forced to disregard social distancing shouldn't we be prioritising them for the vaccine.
I say this as they are performing a vital service to keep the population sane and give us all something to look forward to.

Can only be a few thousand at most. Just turn up with a mobile facility at every professional club.

Wouldn't have to do it for the full season though (hopefully). Just while there's a lockdown on and infection rates are soaring.

It would depend on there being an apetite for this. If infections continue to rise footie will have to stop, unfortunately, it's one of the things that I have really started to enjoy again. For a couple of years if it wasn't boro I didn't really bother watching anything. During lockdown I look forward to watching games.

Footballers start whining and moaning when they're in a 5 star country club preparing to represent their country in a World Cup about how boring and claustrophobic it is. Imagine what they'd be like if you stuck them in a training ground for 6 weeks.

We pray for them. Poor sods

Ha! While that's true probably not quite as bad when the alternative is being stuck at home anyway. The younger ones without families might even prefer to be in a bubble. Can probably socialise more.

I think the current outbreaks are a microcosm of life in general and reflect the number of parties and gatherings that went ahead over Christmas. It will settle down again soon.

I don't believe it can go on, given the numbers we are seeing now in positive tests among players within PL/EFL. I think within a couple of weeks, even less, there'll be a halt to the season until numbers reduce. And God knows when then will be. I hope this doesn't happen, waiting ages for football to resume will be so disappointing. One or two things we all look forward to every week cheering on the mighty Boro .. seeing it stop will make this lockdown business even duller.

Let's hope we start to see numbers drop sooner than later. Must admit, I'm a little concerned about our squad travelling today for the fixture and I hope more don't end up testing positive.

We will certainly learn more about whatever decision will be taken within a matter of days. Fingers crossed games can carry on ..

Police Officers are forced to disregard social distancing measure when they have to make an immediate arrest. They do so without any knowledge of whether that person has COVID symptoms. They have to then go back to their family household at the end of the shift and certainly do not benefit from regular testing. I didn’t hear Steve Bruce mention that when he was droning on about it making financial sense but it’s “morally” wrong that footballers are still playing.

I just can’t agree with this stance, I understand they are keeping people’s minds occupied with the football, but I think it would just add to the issue that these multi millionaires lives are more important than Joe Public, I just don’t think it is the right message.

Yes there is an element of that to it.
What if a professional sportsperson dies of the virus. ? Wouldn't they and their family be aggrieved they were 'forced' to work in a dangerous environment where they can not be socially distanced.

It's no different to lots of North East lads working on various platforms in the North Sea.
