Electric cars to cost more to run then petrol/ diesel cars

Interesting article by Which showing how the rising costs of electricity will make the cost of running some electric cars more expensive then petrol or diesel.

“But with the cost of electricity rising to 52p per kWh, medium car owners, on average, will pay £158 more per year to charge their car compared to running the same sized car on diesel.”Link

😂 they’ve had us over.
Electric cars at this time are a no go.
As op says they’ll cost more to run, they cost more to buy.
They absolutely smash the environment to make, I read the other day that it’s something like 200 tonnes of earth excavated to make each battery, and there’s no plan for them at end of life.
I watched a programme about villages in Africa where birth defects are rocketing due to the mining and dust.
Without massive introduction of wind and solar power then electric vehicles are probably doing as much damage over a lifetime to their petrol equivalent.

What we should be spending money on is public transport infrastructure.

Stop talking sense.

All early adopters are doing is showing they've got a few Bob to throw about.

A mate bought an electric car and also solar panels at the same time. He doesnt do many miles, but the car is constantly topped up from his panels, motoring for free once installed.
He is only sad that he cannot sell his car charge back to the grid.

This the the point I can't accept either. The mining needed for batteries is truly devastating for the natural environment. There is an area in Portugal that might contain the minerals needed for batteries. If that goes ahead the landscape will be destroyed almost.

Electricity suppliers have special tariffs for EV owners that have a much lower rate at night - you then simply schedule your car to charge during these hours. This is also unlikely to go away because electricity suppliers paying significantly less for this electricity at non-peak times.

Yes, you can't always charge your car fully during these times and high mileage EV owners will still have to pay the top whack for some of their charge.

The electricity suppliers must be drooling at the thought of everyone converting to EVs. Once ICE vehicles are banned they will screw people to the floor even more than they do now.

Parity for me, even assuming I’ll be paying the electricity prices stated in the article, will be when petrol comes down to £1.52 a litre, though even then I’ll have the road tax and 2/3 servicing costs.

If that’s your argument against F***ing the planet then you’ve got it all wrong company man.
No it's not, it's part of the argument, there must be 10,000 mobile phones for every electric car at least. It's a significant issue.

As for f%cking up the planet, yes the battery is an issue, but the lifetime impact of an electric car on the planet has been proven multiple times to be less harmful than a diesel or petrol car. It's in the flat earth level of conspiracy, pushed by the oil giants to challenge the proven truth.

I’m alright Jack
nope, just a bit of foresight fella.

I'd love the government to start subsidising solar panels massively, it won't help me, and I'll effectively be paying for other peoples solar through taxes, but it's the right thing for the planet. That's the opposite of 'I'm alright Jack'

You’ve got my quote wrong and got excited about electric v petrol.
I’m not saying petrol is the answer. I’m saying electric, in its current form, also is not the answer. It’s way to expensive for 95% of this board to buy in the first place. It does **** the planet in the mining for materials. And there is no end game for end of life. A lot of what I have read says that the battery’s can’t be reused and the minerals used to make them can’t be re used. We will effectively, as it stands, have tons of waste which will burden the planet until humans have long since gone.
