Electric and Gas Cost

I currently pay £105 per month on a fixed rate with a Scottish Power, due to end beginning of March. I am being quoted £300 per month for a new one year fix rate.

Absolutely incredible, the pricing is clearly designed to allow the company to protect profitability for their shareholders in the short term rather than provide services to customers at a reasonable cost - which should the role of critical infrastructure such as this.

Of course, I can simply roll onto the standard variable rate however this could cost Scottish Power money as it’s capped…..funny I can’t find the standard rate anywhere on their site, so many customers will think the only option is to accept the new fix.

Fix describes it perfectly.

Do you think these astronomical rises will push people over the edge, cause homelessness or worse costs lives, the government need to intervene urgently.
I think they will. Not because they actually care about homelessness or poverty but because to leave it unchecked (along with NI insurance increase, council tax increases etc) will ensure a labour landslide at the next election as even the most deluded will be forced to admit they've become much poorer under a Tory government.

The concern is they don't remove Johnson soon enough and the king ditherer procrastinates on the issue until his hand is forced (as per). It might be too late for many by then.

The current energy prices will destroy this country. I know that competition was meant to bring down prices but when wholesale prices are off the scale like they are now state intervention is needed.

Even more people will have to choose between eating and heating at some point next winter and that can’t be right especially as the big energy providers will still post record profits. No wonder the toriew are happy with the current news being dominated by parties and Covid, it gets them off the hook for everything else that is going wrong in the country.

It is pointless looking to fix right now for the vast majority of people. Goodness knows what a war in the Ukraine and a Putin puppet government will do to the gas price, it won’t bring it down thats for sure.
We desperately need to move asap to alternate fuel supply. I know people rail against nuclear energy, but it has to be a big part of the equation to ensure affordability.

Been doing a re budgeting exercise of our household bills and have had to set aside £300 a month for Gas and Electric

Absolutely staggering the cost now and I do worry for those who can`t afford it.......I`m awfully sure my neighbour is one of those. Haven`t heard her boiler go on for a couple of weeks now and when she comes home from work there`s just ever 1 light on in the house.

I`d ask her if she is ok, but I don`t want to embarrass her, and also i`m not 100% certain on the above.

Going to be desperate times for many :(

Yep. Government will definitely get involved. Not for our sakes to try and save their own skins. There is absolutely no way the entire population of this country can afford on average £300 per month for utilities.

I was paying £65 a month and the company went bust. New deal found was £105 per month, which I was shocked at but got managed to find a two year fix, as I could see price rises coming down the track. Still have 18 months left so was very lucky with the timing but these rises are huge and I am sure my next deal will be much higher. Feel for those already struggling and I know a lot of people are very worried. Think this shambles of a government will have to cancel the NI rise and help with some peoples bills, otherwise there is a very real risk of societal breakdown. That may appear to be alarmist but people are already on the edge.

Rang up to sort mine the other day as I dropped onto variable after octopus went bust.
Daily rate almost the same
Unit price double for electric and triple for gas. I don’t even think the variable will get that high. I’m going to ride it for abit

Something needs doing that’s for sure. Things like solar roofs and energy storage and recovery systems should be mandatory for new builds and businesses. We need to be generating as much of our own energy as possible.

Yes.

Nuclear power and fracking.

We need to become more self sufficient and drive down costs for consumers.

£300/month wow - people can eat reasonably well for £200/month (£7 per day)

I do feel for people in the JAM category of Teresa May (said in 2018) they must be running up debts now or will do from April that are going to take a lot to pay.

For people in low income brackets costs are rising faster than CPI inflation - gas/electric, rents, broadband, public transport, water, council tax. I have also noticed the cost of some basic food stuffs rising more than 10% recently. While some things are not going up in price - I have a Sky package that costs £41/month opposed to £50/month I was paying in 2009 for less channels and lower quality.

I`ve had my gas capped to avoid paying the annual "Standing Charge" + VAT. It amounts to the same cost as a winter-month`s electricity bill. Everything is instant hot water - heating is electric. The connection was maintained for the kitchen sink and a gas point in the kitchen. Waste of money - so its gone.
