Egg shortage?

Lot of stuff written here - let me give you some info (from a retailer - conscious many are wary of any expertise and prefer their theories, but …..here goes)

* Uk retailers committed years ago to supply British Eggs only - many committed to free range too.
* This isn’t a Brexit issue (trust me, we have plenty of those is supply chains nut not here)
* Ling term agreements are in place with UK suppliers
* There just aren’t egg manufacturers in the rest of the world (incl Europe( sat on plies of eggs just on the off chance we suffer from a shortage.
* Avian flu has decimated flocks in the UK with the resultant egg shortage
* Some retailers, notably Sainsburys, have gone to Europe to try and get supply. They have had some success but are paying through the nose.
* Others, including our business have stuck with sourcing from the UK
* Simple supply and demand - shortage of supply = shortage to consumer at higher prices
* To my knowledge no retailer sells eggs as a loss leader - those days are long gone
* This ain’t going away anytime soon - flocks need replacing and, I suspect some will take this opportunity to exit completely.
Funny how the NFU disagree on the brexit issue isn't it?

I did forget about Avian flu, but its wiped out millions of birds where I live and I am sure it has caused some of the supply problems.

If Brexit had caused the problems there would have been major supply problems in 2020 and 2021. The problems seem to have been only visible since the first half of 2022.

Maybe you should take it up with the NFU? ANd do you want me to explain to you what exacerbated means? It's a big word I know

It’s more funny how you want to rely in the NFU to support what you said.

There is no retailer, nor UK egg manufacturer, claiming Brexit has caused the issue but, all of a sudden, the NFU are the font of all knowledge.
Just think about that
As they would say on a rather good TV prog - ‘It’s a lie’

For the record, some retailers have been pretty good at calling out the Brexit farce in other supply chain issues.

Maybe, just maybe you badly want to believe it is Brexit.
Anyway, I’ve given you my words of wisdom - you can fight your corner with others.

Yeah. I like disagreeing with the experts too.

I'll make it easier for you: has brexit made the current egg situation better or worse?
I am not sure its made any difference. The UK uses a dis-proportionally large % of free range eggs compared to the rest of europe, so even though they have a nominal surplus, Uk supermarkets wont import them as they dont think they can sell them at the same profit margins.

Fair enough. I didn't know this.

Look forward to your horse racing winnings when you lose again soon!
This just doesn't make any sense! I love it that you've gone so far down a "Smalltown is the bad guy" fantasy that you'll derail a thread and just post gibberish to continue it. Maybe you should look at yourself? why you feel the need to personally attack me rather than discuss a subject? You might not like what you find but you can only improve as a person
