Egg shortage?

There is no shortage. I believe the farmers are refusing to sell to large supermarkets due to the cost they're charging.

If you know any local egg farmers, get yourselves there and pay them a quid more for a tray of 36 eggs. I go to a place near Potto just off the A172, they charge £4 for 36 eggs but I just leave a fiver.
They've been hatching this plan for a while I reckon 🐣

The egg farmer guy that comes to Ingleby hasn't been there for a few weeks and then posted to say he had to wait for a new flock to reach laying age so presume issues with avian flu as a single case means every bird gets slaughtered.

A lot of butchers sell good quality fresh eggs. That’s where I get mine. They’re usually bigger and better tasting than supermarket ones too.

The feedcost has risen a lot (Ukraine war etc) and some egg businesses have decided there is no profit in selling them any longer, at a loss. Some retailers have pushed up prices such as Lidl as you can still get them there. There has been some panic buying by the Public, because eggs can be stored for 6 weeks etc The porice of egg seemed have being around £1.20 for many years, now more like £1.90.
Plus brexit. But I admire how hard you work to deflect from it

Spot on. Support local. Supermarket eggs are cack compared to locally sourced ones too.

Brexit has **** all to do with the non existent egg shortage either.

From the NFU (who probably;y know more about eggs then most people on here

Brexit has added to the UK’s mounting food supply crisis which has seen a “crippling” shortage of some goods in the supermarket, the nation’s farming union has said.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) said current egg shortages “could just be the start” and warned that consumers could soon see a scarcity of tomatoes, cucumbers, pears and other fresh produce.

As I said and others have said. Famers are not selling eggs to supermarkets as regularly as the supermarkets aren't offering enough money plus the effects of avian flu have had a massive effect too.
Go to any farm around my way and there are plenty of eggs for sale, with all money going directly to the farm. No middle men, no transport costs to pay, no supermarket CEO's funding the petrol costs of their Audi S7's and Aston Martin Vantages.

Yeah. I like disagreeing with the experts too.

I'll make it easier for you: has brexit made the current egg situation better or worse?

You are trying to solely blame the egg shortage in supermarkets on Brexit. I'll answer your question with another. How many farmers do you personally know as friends/close acquaintances in sunny London?

The last shortage, just a few weeks ago, was caused by avian flu
Not entirely. Retailers pushed the narrative of it being 100% down to avian flu, which exacerbated the issue but was the straw that broke the camel's back for producers. For years eggs have been used as a loss leader with producers constantly pushed to produce close to or below cost of production. There is a constant race to the bottom on price for the retailers, with not a thought spared for the sustainability of the entire supply chain. The huge spikes in cost of feed, along with fuel, electricity etc has made it utterly impossible for many suppliers. Many of whom have opted out of producing at the moment. The long term behaviours of retailers towards suppliers is scandalous

I was quoting the NFU? I presume they know farmers. So, other than it being an obvious perspnal attack for no reason, I don't see the relevance of this question.
