Crucial game for Pools tonight who are having a wretched season.
Since they regained League status - Pools have struggled to cement their place.
Carlisle are obvious favourites to win, but a point would be a useful addition to help steady the ship and compliment Pools win against Rochdale.

Carlisle v Pools

opposition

It's fair to say that the first half of the season has been a struggle for Hartlepool, with just the four wins from their first 25 games.
Things are very tight at the bottom of the division though, and manager Keith Curle has a reputation for turning clubs round and digging them out of tight spots.

That point was proven once again on Saturday with an important 2-0 home win over fellow strugglers Rochdale.
They climbed out of the relegation zone courtesy of those three points, and will be looking to continue that upward momentum.
Goals conceded has been an issue - they have the division's biggest against tally as things stand with 47 - and that's something that must change through their remaining 20 fixtures.

Midfielder Matty Dolan was the first piece of January business when he arrived on loan from Newport, with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Veteran defender Peter Hartley agreed a short-term contract on his return from India, and Daniel Dodds brings more to the back line having made the short hop from Boro on a permanent contract.

More work to address the defemsive issues was done when Edon Pruti made the swicth from Brentford B on a permanent deal, with terms undisclosed.

Josh Umerah has been a regular name on the scoresheet with 12 goals from 30 appearances so far - his latest was the opener in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Dale.

He's dangerous around the edge of the area, and can break the lines if given the right kind of service.
As for the last time we met this season, he's our one to watch.

Our referee for this game is Samuel Barrott. He has taken charge of 28 games so far this season showing 80 yellow cards and two reds.

He was at Brunton Park for the FA Cup meeting with Shrewsbury in December 2021 where the visitors scored twice to give themselves a 2-0 lead. Jordan Gibson netted in time added on, but it wasn't enough to change the end result. Morgan Feeney, Corey Whelan and Zach Clough were booked for the Blues.
He was at Brunton Park in October 2021 for the 2-0 reverse at the hands of Forest Green. Jamille Matt and Nicky Cadden did the first half damage, and Tristan Abrahams and Brennan Dickenson were booked for the Blues.
He was with us for the first time when he officiated in the 2-0 home win over Scunthorpe in April 2021, where Jon Mellish bagged both goals. No Carlisle names were taken on the day.

Match Preview: Pools Head to Carlisle

1674582817618.png
After Saturday's morale-boosting victory over Rochdale, Hartlepool United head to Cumbria to take on Carlisle on Tuesday (7.45pm KO).

The Opposition
Carlisle currently sit fourth in League Two after 11 wins from 25 games this season. They've won three of their last five matches, and last time out, they beat Newport County 2-0 at home. The Blues are led by Paul Simpson, a former U17 World Cup winner with England. His side has been bolstered in recent weeks by the arrival of John-Kymani Gordon, with the Crystal Palace forward joining on a half-season loan deal.

The History
The sides have met 109 times in first-class competitions, with Pools winning 37 times, Carlisle winning 52 times, and 20 matches ending in a draw. Earlier this season, Pools lost 3-1 at home despite Alex Lacey's goal, with Pools' last win over the Blues coming in August 2021.
Prior to that, Pools' last win came in 2011 when they were 4-0 victors. Now-coach Tony Sweeney was on the scoresheet for Pools, the recently re-signed Peter Hartley was enjoying his first spell at Pools, and two Poolies-to-be featured for Carlisle - Liam Noble and Jordan Cook.

Team News
Pools have no new injury concerns ahead of the fixture, with Jamie Sterry having come through his return to action unscathed. New signings Edon Pruti, Peter Hartley, Matty Dolan, and Dan Dodds will all be available again, while Mo Niang returned to action after a long lay-off. Alex Lacey and Tom Crawford are long-term absentees.

Daniel Dodds: Hartlepool United sign Middlesbrough full-back on permanent deal

12 January 2023

Daniel Dodds

Daniel Dodds played the final game of his loan spell at Darlington on Boxing Day

Hartlepool United have signed full-back Daniel Dodds from Middlesbrough on a permanent transfer.
Dodds did not make a senior appearance for Boro but played for their under-21 side in the EFL Trophy.
The 21-year-old was on loan at National League North club Darlington earlier this season.
"I've seen him four or five times live and he's got good dynamics. He's got a hunger and desire to improve," said Pools boss Keith Curle.

Good News for Pools - who completed the loan signing of Leicester City Goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk this week.

Leicester City transfer agreed as 'outstanding' prospect gets another chance to shine

The 22-year-old Pole was recalled from his spell at Fleetwood earlier in the season, but now drops down a division in a new bid to try to get him senior football

Leicester City goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk has secured a loan move to League Two strugglers Hartlepool for the remainder of the season.

Highly-rated at City as a future first-team player, Stolarczyk has been sent out to gain experience after returning from Fleetwood a few weeks ago. The Pole did not make a single League One appearance and so was recalled.

City, under new loans manager Robert Huth, hope Stolarczyk will get game-time with Hartlepool, who sit 22nd in League Two, two points above the relegation zone. If the 22-year-old does start, he will be busy, with Hartlepool having conceded the most shots on target in League Two, and the second most in the EFL after Championship side Rotherham.

Their manager Keith Curle said: “We’re delighted to bring Jakub to the club. We can see from his two previous loans the success he has had and he provides good competition for Ben (Killip). We know he will work well alongside Ben and Kyle (Letheren) and we thank Leicester for allowing us to bring him in.”

Stolarczyk has featured for City in pre-season and has been backed by Brendan Rodgers to be an “outstanding” goalkeeper at the highest level in the future. He impressed on loan at Dunfermline last season, and did well when called upon by Fleetwood this term, helping them to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup as he made seven appearances in cup games.

Crunch time for both teams.
Gareth Ainsworth continues to work wonders with the Chairboys - never saying never.

Oxford United have learnd today that their plans to move to a new Stadium next Kidlington have been approved by the Council.
Oxford United see the new stadium as a vital part of the plan to keep the football club afloat.
The old place is past its sell-by date, so the "U"s are looking forward to the next stage.
A win for Wycombe puts them within touching distance of the play-offs. Oxford need the points to cement their place and hope to climb the table.
Its another one of those "is it a derby" games - with only 31 miles seperating them.

View from the Vale

The sides haven’t faced each other in Burslem since 1996, but as the teams get ready to face off on Tuesday night, here is some interesting pre-match reading.

Opposition Coach's thoughts:
Derby County’s assistant Head Coach, Richie Barker, said: “Port Vale are very organised, and everyone knows their role.
“They are very aggressive from set-pieces and Vale Park is a difficult place and a relatively local game so a good crowd will be there from our point of view."

Fixture Flashback/Reverse Fixture:
Sky Bet League One, Pride Park, Saturday 8th October 2022: Derby County 1-2 Port Vale

imagenis16.png

Back in October, Darrell Clarke’s Valiants shocked the Rams when they produced a brilliant second-half turnaround to defeat the 10-man side in a tasty encounter at Pride Park. Both Ellis Harrison and James Wilson netted after the break to secure the three points in Derbyshire after James Collins had opened the scoring for the hosts.Derby’s in-form striker gave County the lead after 5 minutes when a blistering counterattack led to Tom Barkhuizen crossing for the number nine to half-volley into the back of the net. After waiting 73 games for a penalty, the Valiants were awarded two at Pride Park, and top scorer Harrison made no mistake with the second one, smashing it in to bring the Vale level after 55 minutes. Vale managhed a second to beat the Rams. Tensions flared...It didn't matter though as the Vale held on through six minutes of stoppage time to complete a memorable victory in Derbyshire, their first away to the Rams since 1923.

Aldershot early goal away to Maidstone. "The Shots" have struggled to find consistency, but have managed 4 points out the last 6 after three consecutive defeats.
