Eat out to help out.... it begins!

Think I paid £2.50 for a double sausage and egg McMuffin meal and a flatbread today 🤯 Best of all it was air conditioned in there.

My girlfriend took me out for lunch for my birthday last week and they did it in the pub without even asking.

Like half the country I won’t be eating out at all when I’m made redundant or on a new contract. Covid has massively changed my priorities, spare cash will be going on investments and essentials rather than treats. I want to put myself in a position where I can cover the mortgage and pay the bills with dividends and investments and then I don’t have to worry about the stress of losing my job ever again as I’ve had 5 months of being told I’m getting made redundant or I’ll be fired and re hired.

What sector are you in?

So far we have tried La Porto's, Norton, Carpacciaos, Vadah, and the Purple Peacock, Yarm. Tonight we are going to Violet Green, Norton.

So far La Porto's impressed me most.

What sector are you in?

Aviation, Engineering.

After 4 months of not talking the union has negotiated us a ‘deal’ today.

- 5% temp pay cut for 2 years (reasonable)
- No 4% pay rise negotiated and due next year (reasonable)
- Then after 2 years a permanent pay cut to shift pay based on market rate (what ever that is)
- Ability to move me on nights if they want or pause my employment and not pay me for 2 months.
- 22 days holiday down to 20 in 2021 then 19 in 2022.

So basically a pay cut for 2 years, then a smaller pay cut followed by a pay freeze. The best bit is they still want to get rid of 260 blokes so even if this passes the ballot there’s no certainty of a job. It’s designed to mitigate redundancy, that could be 1 job and there’s nothing to stop them starting the redundancy process again the following day.

Tucked up. At least I’ll save my £14 a month union fees, that will buy me one gsk share a month.

Is this covid related, or brexit related or bit of both?

Its BA doing what they’ve wanted to do for years but haven’t had the leverage. They are using Covid to make even more profit in the future. I’ll take the deal and see out the recession but I’ll leave for the railways as soon as I can. I’m Heathrow, not sure my colleagues and friends at Gatwick are going to have the same choice.

Is the feeling in your industry that there will be a deal with the EU before 31st December for the aviation industry so it won't be affected further?

Who knows. I don’t think Brexit will affect the aviation industry, I expect it to be pretty seamless as it needs to be for continuity and safety. The U.K. already has some of the strongest regs and standards in the Eu. No country will gain from it not being a seamless transitions, only everyone will lose. But this is BA just trying to drive through changes that will see them make more money in years to come. Deal or no deal they would be doing this anyway. They been threatening and bullying us for 5 months now, using tricks like sending links about mental health to tick a box, phoning us on furlough or generating automatic replies to emails all to say they’ve legally consulted with us. I was always proud to work for them but now I can’t wait for a better opportunity. My mum left me some shares when she died and I’ve got a taste for the investments and dividends, that’s the ultimate goal. Not interested in being used, abused and binned off by a company when it suits and looking to generate a salary other ways so I’m not reliant on anyone else.

4 of us went to Vadah last night. Over all I think the order was 8x poppadoms 1x pickle tray 4 x starters 4 x mains 2x naan 3x Rices and 1x chips. 4x lagers 2x large wines and 1x coke. Total bill came to £90.

I had scallops for starters which I was abit meh! Wasn’t totally sold on them. My Mrs had duck which was very nice. Also had one of my mates bhajis which were really nice too.

My main I had the chefs special. Came wrapped in foil in the shape of a swan and was cooked in whisky. The waiter then set fire to the underneath by the table side before serving. It was really nice and cooked to the same heat as a madras so was quite spicy.

Rushed review as heading out on a last minute to see if can get a walk in somewhere. Heading Staithes way.

Vadah 3.5 stars - service excellent

Hope you are right about the seamless transition, as it is a lose-lose, but it's a lot more complicated that you would think. The EU really do not want a repeat of the Swiss model with hundreds of bilateral agreements. I'd go as far as to say they definitely will not accept this. It will be a very skinny deal by 31st December or a comprehensive one completed when it is detailed and right for both sides, or certainly for the EU. It might be a skinny deal plus a very small number of additional bilateral deals covering perhaps fishing, aviation, security/intelligence sharing and our monumentally stupid withdrawal from euratom. I'm sure it will enable most flights to keep flying but the EU are hamstrung on some aspects since their own framework stipulates airlines operating in the EU must be majority owned by EU companies. I'm not sure BA is, so some restructuring will be needed. Perhaps this is partly why they are revising your employment contract.

No doubt you are even more miffed at the brexit vote now that covid has come along. Although I guess BA might be able to cope better than the low cost airlines and ultimately regain more market share domestically.

BA is owned by IAG a Spanish company and they won’t suddenly stop us from flying just because the U.K. aren’t a member of a political club. I’m not concerned about Brexit and neither are my colleagues judging by how many voted for it too. From a operating and maintenance perspective it’s the U.K. that already sets the bar in terms of standards and legislation around the world. The EU is already a patchwork of differing countries legislation but with a minimum requirement, the U.K already exceeds those of every country in the EU and that of the US.

Hadn't realised you were a brexit voter, I just assumed otherwise, given your sector.

Anyway, have you actually read the link?

It's from February. What has changed since then?

When did IAG (BA) restructure? According to the IoG article BA would have to restructure as it would no longer be owned by a majority of shareholders based in the EU. Quick look on Wicki says that when BA and Iberia merged, since BA was the bigger company it took 55% of the shareholding. According to Wickipedia Qatar Airways owns 25% of the company as of February. I doubt Qatar Airways are EU based. It's about share ownership, not where it's head office is registered for tax purposes. The operational head office is in London and it's main listing is on the London Stock Exchange. I have no idea if this is going to be easy to fix or a major headache, especially since we still don't know what we voted for more than 1500 days ago. Let's hope your company has enough time to react to what is agreed, or isn't agreed.

From the outside you seem so very confident that I can only presume you have indeed looked into this in detail both in June 2016 before you put that X in that box and kept on top of matters ever since, given it was your own livelihood you were gambling with, but you know, something tells me....

Hey lefty stop derailing my EOTHOB thread! 😉

Just back in. Went to the Cod and Lobster in Staithes. Full booked inside so had to wait for someone to finish outside and jump on the table.

I had panfried seabass on crushed potatoes with a spicy Mediterranean style sauce and a side of vegetables. Mrs had gluten free cod and chips. My daughter had the soup and 1x Peroni 1x white wine 1x lemonade and 1x cordial. Total cost £23.

Seabass was very nice along with the potatoes and the sauce. Veg was abit underwhelming. Mrs said her gluten free cod and chips were the best she had tried. I tried the batter was a lot superior to ones I had tried of hers too.

Total score 4.5/5. Would have been great inside but that can’t be helped. Only marked down due to veg.

Cod and Lobster takes number 1 spot for my outings after the end of the 2nd week of the EOTHOB

😀 Soz.

A bit of a heads up, my wife and I went to a local hotel in Dunstable, The Old Palace Lodge if you are ever in the area. The food was excellent, but, and here is the heads up, I wanted to tip the staff as I saved £30 and whilst I could tip using my card, the waitress told me that the company keep it. My wife looked this up after complaining to MGM, the owners. In any event that is quite common practice, so be sure to tip with cash and ask if you are tipping with your card.

The food was the best I have had for ages BTW.
