Eat out to help out.... it begins!

A bit of a heads up, my wife and I went to a local hotel in Dunstable, The Old Palace Lodge if you are ever in the area. The food was excellent, but, and here is the heads up, I wanted to tip the staff as I saved £30 and whilst I could tip using my card, the waitress told me that the company keep it. My wife looked this up after complaining to MGM, the owners. In any event that is quite common practice, so be sure to tip with cash and ask if you are tipping with your card.

The food was the best I have had for ages BTW.
Sounds good but apart from driving through Dunstable on the A5 when the M1 is clogged up I do try and avoid it. Cycling in the nearby Chilterns - Whipsnade and Aldbury. - now that’s another matter.

Cardiff, you are not wrong, it is locally known as Dumpstable. If you are passing through next week do try the place, the food is very very good. For 2 starters, 3 mains and a pudding and 1 pint of diet coke (3.75, unbelievable) the bill was 31.95, certainly the best value meal I have had in the UK.

Anyone struggling to get in anywhere, number 23 in saltburn you just rock and they turn the tables over quickly. Really slick. Great ale on tap too
Had a pint of tiny rebel - club Tropicana. Lovely

Nice beer.. I want to go there but the Mrs is gluten free so there isn’t much point unfortunately. I have had an easy week. Back at work after 2 1/2 weeks and temporary promoted so had abit to catch up on. I’ve had couple Big Mac meals for £1.70 though. Next week cookfellas Tuesday and Central Park Redcar Wednesday... then last day 31st got 25% of Toby carvery so will be 75% in total

Went to the Tomahawk in Potto on Tuesday night, booked well in advance for a 6.30-8.00 slot. Social distancing was fine.

The food was superb.

Two Wagyu 12oz Rump Steaks, chips cooked in beef dripping, mushrooms, absolutely delicious. Son had a 36oz Porterhouse with sides of beef dripping chips, eggs with cheese and bacon sprinkles, sweet potatoes with a chilli seasoning and some hash browns.

It’s pricey (Wagyu’s were £40 and sons ‘tomahawk’ was £60), but worth it especially as it was a special occasion and £10 off each.

Into the last full week of the EOTHOB

so tonight I went to Cookfellas in Gboro. Wanted to go for a while so had been really looking forward to it.

To start went for pint in The Monk and they had Plum Porter on cask so a bonus to start the evening.

Moving onto the food. Starter I had sea salt and chilli chicken wings. Nothing like I’d had before. Really crispy skin and perfect balance of sea salt and chilli flakes. The best chicken wings I’ve ever had.

Main I had a special. Halibut in a Jamaican style curry with sweet potato and sweet potato crisp. Excellent again, had quite a kick and I finished what certainly was a chunky piece of halibut.

Mrs had king prawns to start and duck breast with a port/bramble jus and duck liver spring rolls. Feedback again was spot on.

4 adults 2x courses each and 1 child meal £64.

We have a winner now as thr award for Cookfellas is 5/5

We've got Cookfellas booked tonight in Guisborough. Never had a bad meal there.

Pretty much everywhere is fully booked for the rest of the month. Great to see too (y)

It's one of the regular places we eat out @Cooper671 Definitely in the top 3 of places we eat out. It's rarely quiet too which speaks volumes of how popular it is.

Id never considered it because I thought it was Italian until I looked on Facebook one day. Certainly is one of best places I’ve been round here.

Cooper they should get you doing reviews in the Gazette, you should start rating the decor and bogs aswell

ha I did say before I could do Sunday lunch hunters as I’ve ate many places for Sunday lunch 😆

We've trebled trade plus more.
Myself and all the other staff are absolutely shattered and it's showing and taking its toll now. Over 900 punters each day Monday and Tuesday this week.
Can't cope with the demand or the amount of prep.
Chef's doing many more hours. 66 hours I did last week and looking like more this week.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday still as busy as normal too.
Like I said earlier in the thread enjoy your discount but please don't moan about a slightly longer wait for your food. We've had some really rude customers saying things like we shouldn't book so many people in then and such like. FFS

That’s because every person thinks the world resolves around them. Everyone thinks they are more important than the next person

i work in Mortgage’s, customers think the same way. People don’t allow for things being pushed back for COVID.

might be worth getting front of house to tell people that they should expect a longer wait than normal. (if they aren’t already)

It’s great to see that this scheme has been a resounding success with 64m uses so far and two more days still to come. I certainly have enjoyed a few nice nights how with friends and family.

So the important thing now is to acknowledge that the scheme has been in place to kickstart the hospitality sector and give the public confidence to venture out again. So when this is all over next Monday evening hopefully we continue to support the sector by dining out when there isn’t a discount available. Because if we don’t then the danger is that all EOTHO would have achieved would have been to merely delay the closure of businesses particularly the smaller independents who need us to get back out there and visit them.

I find it funny that on the bbc has stories of people saving 150 or 200 quid cos they’ve used it everyday

i bet their savings balance hasn’t seen an increase, they’ll have spent more eating out than they normally do

Yes there is no doubt that I have eaten more than I would normally do and by definition spent more. Wouldn’t say it has saved me any money net but good to know that what money I have spent is helping local business.

The cynic in me would like to know what percentage of this went to service station subways, McDonald’s, KFCs etc

Went to Estabulo in darlo last night, got a late booking in online the day before. Late at 9:30 but we were wanting to try it so made sense to do it on the cheap.

food was ok - it’s essentially similar to Fazenda and other Rodizio style places. We live Fazenda but nearest is Leeds and it’s pricy, this is a bit cheaper at £28pp, so was hoping to uncover a local gem.

free parking at feethams multi-storey which was a result. First time in that little area with all the restaurants in, pretty good setup.

Compared to Fazenda I’d say it’s def a budget version, part of not may have been eat out to help out or being late it the day, but the meats were slower coming out then Fazenda and you got less each time. The variety was a bit poorer - we got offered sirloin about 6 times but only the fillet mignon once, and a few less options, but it is cheaper.

by the end I was leaning towards 6.5 to 7 out of ten and willing to go back a quieter time to give it a fair crack of the whip. However by the time we got home we both needed to rush to the bog and that’s the first time a meal out has ever done that to me... went straight through us both and as she was at work until 8pm, it was the only common thing we had both eaten all day 🍾

as such probably won’t be rushing back in a hurry!

Although we have saved a small fortune this month by dining out a lot more than we would have, it has certainly cost us more than we would have usually spent in a month!

As with @Cardiffdaffs it's pleasing to know the money we've spent will hopefully go a small way to keeping those businesses open.

The more small local businesses open, the better(y)

yeah it’s a common thing people say “I saved £x” while spending a tidy sum, guess it’s a turn of phrase. It’s definitely cost you and your overall balance is lower, you just spent less than if you were doing those activities anyway at full price. But would you have without the discount? Debatable.

we’ve eaten in places we otherwise would not have gone to so it’s been good in that respect
