Genuine question.

Does anybody actually care about magicians?

I read a few books on mentalism(Derran Brown type stuff) a couple of year ago during the first lock down and learned a few decent card tricks at the time also. Forgot most of it now but found it very interesting. An old book called 13 steps to mentalism was probably the book that stood out the most and caught my interest above other books I read(sorry I can't remember the author). Once you have even a basic understanding of the processes involved and try a few of the 'tricks' even at home to yourself you appreciate the skill of the people who make a career out of it, and will be even more amazed at skill and dedication of the illusionist and mentalists at the top of the game.

It's very clever when done very well. My mate ended up being on stage with David Copperfield years ago at a show in America. Her other half was blown away and to be fair to her she's never told anyone how it was done.
In Crete this year they had a magic act on one night....basics....cutting people in half etc. The daughter (16) was blown away as she'd never seen magic live and kept asking us how it was done but we didn't tell her as we didn't want to spoil it for her.

It's a weird art form legz. With most things you practice so you can show people what you learned. With sleight of hand you practice so you can hide it from the audience.

You are absoloutely right that the explanation for most effects is mundane, even if it does require a lot of skill and ruins an effect.

Some magician that, one lass was cut in half the other was blown away.

It’s wonderful skill that can take your breath away
The £10 note in an orange is brilliant

As a teenager dragged on stage at Blackpool by Paul Daniels. His getting a member of the audience to stick to the chair routine in which he basically whispered from the side of his mouth for me to pretend to stick to the chair. I did and caused great hilarity.

What do you mean "care"?

I enjoy watching a trick done well. Knowing that it's a trick doesn't diminish the experience.

I'm also capable of enjoying the cinema without believing every film I watch is a documentary.

I'll admit I thought a mentalist was something else.

Would you actively book tickets to see a magician, or will you be watching this show?

When I’ve seen them at weddings etc I’ve thought ‘oh that’s cool’, but I can’t see anyone ever being that enthused with it to actively book tickets to see one.

Crap to watch on telly but impressive when they do it to you.
I was discussing this with my daughter the other day and have to disagree. We went to see Derren Brown while in London a few years ago, having been quite impressed with some of his stuff he did on his TV shows.
The live show was a major disappointment, none of the tricks were that impressive and without knowing all of the finer details of the tricks you could basically work out what he was doing.

I’ve never seen a magician live at a show, I meant more when they actually perform the trick on you than in front of you.

We had one at our wedding and they were great. Saw a few at wedding fairs too.
