Dr Bike’s back in town to ensure two-wheeled Christmas treats are roadworthy in time for the big day. Bicycles are a perennial favourite present for riders young and old, but an expert set-up will ensure they’re also safe and ready to hit the road.

This year’s free Christmas Bike Build event – in partnership with Sustrans and Cleveland Fire Brigade - takes place at the Middlesbrough Walking and Cycling Hub on Friday, December 15.

Boxed bikes can be dropped off with for assembly by the expert team of mechanics from Sustrans. Cleveland Fire Brigade and the Road Safety Team from Middlesbrough Council will be on hand to promote the Be Safe, Be Seen campaign along with information around the risks of drink driving, and the safe and legal use of e-bikes and e-scooters.

Mike O’Reilly, Middlesbrough Council’s Road Safety and Sustainable Travel Officer, said: “A Christmas bike is one of those presents we remember for the rest of our lives, and one that opens up a whole new world of adventure and possibility.

“But most bikes - new or secondhand - will benefit from a check-up to make sure they’re safe and everything’s working as it should.

“Our Christmas Bike Build will ensure that special Christmas present really does deliver those life-long memories, both for experienced cyclists and new riders alike.”

  • This year’s Christmas Bike Build takes place at Middlesbrough Walking and Cycling Hub, 87 Grange Rd, TS1 2LS F on Friday, December, 15 from 10am to 5pm.
