Downing Street 'wine-time Fridays'!

Friday drinks has been a cultural inclusion in office life in commercial world particularly in London for a couple of years now. My office used to wheel the trolley out.

Ex civil servants and government members are aghast that they have brought it into the public service arena. It is highly inappropriate for a tax funded organisation to operate in that fashion.

I've worked in engineering and construction all my life in all sorts of industries; Petrochem, Oil & Gas, Rail, Power Generation, Heavy Lifts etc.

I can honestly say that I've never been in an environment where drinks at your desk after work was permitted, whether that was in a head office or a site portacabin. It just isn't allowed.
 
As far back as the late 80s, I worked for a software house that had a '5pm Friday help yourself to a beer' policy. The boss said it cost less than the tea and coffee and more work got done as people finished off work instead of shooting off to the pub.
I also worked for an oil & gas company that had monthly "CEO's drinks" in the dining room and extra drink ups for 'First Oil' events (the oil find might not prove to be viable, no matter).
Neither of the above were what you could call 'boozy' or a 'knees-up' (MPs and tabloid journos seem to live in a bygone age).
