Downing Street Briefing.

To be fair to the government they did get their orders in nice and early which has helped immensely. It doesn't excuse the worst death rate in the world, but it was a good move. We payes 10 Euro's a shot more than the EU for the privelidge but it will be worth it, assuming the delayed shots don't impact negatively on the efficacy of the vaccine.

fair point, yes they made orders early, although it looks like big pharma made promises that were mutually exclusive to us and the EU, never trust big business.
On another thread it appears that Astra Zeneca signed a best effort contract with the EU because they had other committments. I didn't read the link, but if that is the case then they haven't over promised.

Not sure about that. Surely if your contract with the EU is to provide vaccines at your "best effort" thats not quantifiable? Sorry but I think the EU are at fault here. They should have specified a specific amount. Then its up to AZ to deliver thay number. Is it stands its just up to AZ to make best efforts to deliver. Which I assume they are doing, or at least the EU can't prove otherwise

I would be wary of believing those levels of details in the press. Those contracts will have non-disclosure clauses that will invalidate them. You have 3 parties trying to save face AZ, EU and UK, chances are they've all mucked up to some degree.

For actively seeding Covid into care homes last year by not testing those returning to care homes from hospitals, resulting in 20000 deaths of the most vulnerable, that alone should see Johnson an co facing corporate manslaughter charges - that was negligence bordering on murder

🐔
The government and the NHS are still doing it.

I know this first hand.

Thats a good point. I don't think we can trust 100 any big organisation, be it public or private. They all have to spin things their own way

They ultimately will not want to bite the hand that feeds them or have their contracts dragged through the public.

That may be true BoroMart, but we sign Best Effort clauses in contracts all the time, and it does ring true here given the uncertainty around demand v production. I would be surprised if the UK contract doesn't also have Best Effort clauses contained in it also.

quite possibly, the story being sown in the UK media is aren't our government great for their foresight and dirty EU trying to to screw us over. This is almost certainly untrue, PR, spin.

In what way was 50k deaths and counting since November expected?

Winter is not an excuse for a failure of this magnitude in these times.
Never said that.
Had a friend in the nhs who told me in summer It was all about a second wave
I’m not an expert , I work in IT, it was just a comment
Clearly a lot of angry people about so I won’t make any further comment

peace

I would agree with that assessment, I suspect, as you say, there is a fair bit of spin on all sides here. It was always going to be a race to procure vaccination shots on a nation by nation basis. That is to be fully expected and no country or bloc can be criticized for that, it is what every nation would expect whilst their citizens are dying.

Going back to the OP: I believe that when Johnson said "we have done the best we can" it's the first time in recorded history he's being 100% truthful.

Only the shambolic, scheming, incompetent and stupid cabinet he has surrounded themselves could fail this badly and it still be the best they could do
