Wonderful isnt it.
Neo-liberal asset - stripping [misnamed "privatisation" and "free competition"] -
means the British tax-payer pours money down the throats of international hedge-funders and shareholders, without owning a rivet in an Azuma or a stone on any runway in Britain.
Our money was handed directly to the private railway shareholders during covid ["subsidy"] and is now being used to pay them on the days of the current rail disputes over wages ["compensation"]. Thus the strike will go on ad-infinitum whilst the rail workers lose pay and the private profiteers fill their pockets with our money.
Disinvestment in our railways has meant declining infrastructure at a time of the highest demand for them since the 1950`s.
Our rail fares are the highest per passenger mile in Europe - with passengers paying directly to the private shareholders.
We have no control over those private companies, who continually hand back franchises and make a complete mess of our railways.
Note - Government only step in when private companies cant screw profits out of the railway - but nothing to do concerning us - the passengers.
The East Coast Mainline has been "administered" [re-nationalised] by the Department of Transport on several occasions when franchisers have handed the keys back. Likewise Southern, South-Eastern, East Midlands Railway and Northern Trains. The firm which runs East Midlands Railways - Abelio - is an arm of the Dutch State Railways [ Nederlandse Spoorwegen ].
East Coast Trains under renationalisation was handing a healthy profit back to the Treasury before it was handed over to the next group of private share-holders. So the money doesnt go back into the public purse, but into the pockets of the private profiteers.

What a way to run a public transport system.

Dont start on National Express, Stagecoach, First Group or Arriva......(n)
