Dom Shaw and Scott Wilson - on the Edwards Appointment

I think its admirable but misguided.

Im not a fan of throwing players under the bus or calling out individuals. But the head coach taking all the responsibility is too far the other way.

The players are the ones out there on the pitch. They have as much power to influence things as anyone. They need to own their performances as much as the coach does.

I'd far rather a manager talks about "we". "We need to do better". "We know where we need to improve" etc.

Collective responsibility for successes and failures. If you keep absolving players of any blame you run the risk of them not trying to improve or fix things. Why would they? You're telling them they're doing nowt wrong.
Yeah I mean we don't know what he said behind closed doors but at times if he genuinely was absolving them of responsibility he was letting them off imo.

But I do think part of it was to try and encourage the fans not get on the players' backs and give him the stick instead. Which is admirable.

RW's interview as Luton manager

"We let down our fans today, especially those dedicated fans that made the 44 mile round trip. Myself and the players and coaches will identifty and address the mistakes of today, so there is never a repeat performance. I want a reaction from the players who I know they can do much better. We played reasonable well in the first 30 minutes but we need to apply that the whole fo the game. My job is to help enable the players to do that and the fans can be assured I will work night and day to achieve that. We lost our heads a bit today and it will not occur again"

Do you want to post one he gave after a win, or… are we just ignoring those.

That one quoted VAN, was on the Gazette (I believe) recent analysis of him it was highlighted by them not me.

To me It is important how manager react and what they say after difficult results and runs.

I sincerely hope Edwards has fully reflected back on those times and learnt, and in the future will adjust some of what he does and says. In his favour he is only 42 and so has time to improve. Local radio in Hertforshire suggest he was badly affected psychologically by Lockyer injuries/illness. Time can a great healer so again I hope he has now moved on psychologically after a decent break.

This thing about the majority of fans. The vast majority aren’t posting on here or online elsewhere. You hear this all the time on football podcasts and in football articles, that there’s a majority of fans either for or against something when the truth of it is they mean the majority of fans posting online.

There’ll be 20,000 Boro supporters who’ve not really got an opinion on it, partly because it’s the close season and almost certainly because they’ll wait to watch us play and make judgements based on that.

I like Shaw and Wilson but do they really know what’s happening at the club or out on the street? They were blindsided by Carrick’s sacking and how often are they out on the streets talking to actual people instead of looking at their screens? The same goes for almost every football journalist actually. You can tell by listening to some of them that they have no interaction with actual football supporters apart from on Twitter.

This majority of Boro fans against Rob Edwards, I wonder how many of them had written off Akpom and/or thought Morgan Rogers wasn’t up to it. I was one of those who said we’d be lucky to give Akpom away, and any Boro fan that posts online is lying if they claim to have known what he would do in his last year.

Rob Edwards will get a fair crack from
Boro supporters. Once the first signings come in things will start to change.
I completely get that there will be doubts about Rob Edwards, particularly at Luton last season. There's no dressing it up - they were in absolute freefall and his post Boro defeat interview was pretty stunning, almost pleading for the sack.
He does however, have some success on his CV, both at FGR and Luton. He seems willing to reflect and learn and will be supported by a new coaching staff.
Ok, he most certainly wasn't most fans 1st choice, but let's get some new signings thru' the door, give him and his team pre-season to bed in, then get behind both him and the team and you never know, it may just be a great fit. We'll be the biggest club he's led and as such, there's a very big carrot for him to succeed - fail and his career will be going backwards at a rate of knots.
The big unknown is: is he the right man, at the right time, at the right place?
I'd like to think we all hope so.
UTFB.

At games I always fully support my team - it is painful at times like at the end of the Norwich game. I didn't boo and was trying to gee up the players, despite the recent poor results. It was actually a good test of fans resillence. Most left right on the final whistle that day, when normally they would have stayed to clap the players in a last home game of the season. I was one of the last to leave the NW corner. Others may say I was delluded, but I tend to fight to the bitter end.

We have all seen some very strange stuff in football - Leicester win the Premier League - Rogers turn from £1m failure at Blackpool in 2023 to £80m England International in 2025. I know posters will ridicule it but we were third in xG difference table last season despite having 10 squad player regularly missing and making some bad mistakes in the Jan Window etc

Signings often often make a manager, look at Bryan Robson who struggled as a manager but was given some great signings, which gave him two promotions and three cup finals.

The one thing that the last three seasons has shown us is that you need a manager with a plan but also one who is adaptable. We played some beautiful football under Carrick, some of the best I've seen from a Boro side, but time and again it fell apart because when other teams adapted to counter us Carrick himself wasn't capable of doing the same.

Rob Edwards will more than likely not have us playing the same beautiful passing football that we saw in the last few years, but he got a Luton side that absolutely no-one fancied organised and functional all the way to the Premier League and he did it pretty much on a shoestring. He can bounce back and succeed in spite of a tough few years, he needs the backing of Steve Gibson and the recruitment team to do so because the squad has gaping holes in it right now. He also needs to be given a chance by the fans, I'm sure that in spite of the grumbling most will be behind him when the season kicks off.

He's not my first choice, I'd have taken Danny Rohl because he's performing miracles at a crisis club and I can see him going right to the very top, but if it is to be Edwards then he'll have my support, if he is going to succeed here he needs to be given a chance to show what he can do.

It seems to me that the papers are trying to convince the fans that this is a good appointment. I'm not sure he's adaptable, I haven't seen any evidence of it.

Let's hope he can deliver.
I think he compromised with his preferred style at Luton, to best continue their momentum, so Im inclined to think he's pragmatic enough to play to a teams strengths and adaptable enough 59 be able to coach them in that style.

Ultimately though, were getting a head coach who Scott obviously holds in high regard, so that has to count for something. It takes much of the uncertainty and unknowns around his character away at least.

I think he might surprise a few people, let's hope he does.

I don’t think most fans need convincing. I’m certainly open minded, and after the last couple of seasons, I’m quite excited to see how we are at the start of the season. Sounds like we’re bringing in some proper coaches to the coaching set up, but recruitment of players is going to be vital.
