I get what you are saying but what about those good folk who take a rescued animal and look after it with love and kindness and give it care and companionship, where before it knew nothing but fear and suffering?
Surely they are improving the animal’s life and wellbeing immeasurably?

Just to be clear - I’m not saying anything. Just find it a fascinating discussion.

Those folk who look after rescue animals warm my heart.

If you take the original conversation further though - without animal ownership there are no animals to rescue.

One phrase often thrown around goes something like this:
’People say they ‘love’ their dog…..they buy it, chop its bits off, slap it for acting naturally (barking), keep it cooped up apart from a couple of walks a day then pop it in a kennel whenever they want to go on holiday….. if that’s love?????

They do it because they can - that’s ownership

I know you're trying to be "hilariously edgy" but that is utter carp. I have never hit my dog, he comes on holiday with me (or stays with family) etc.

Oh and who is head of Maffs on here?

As someone with a golden retriever and a child with autism the bond they form with humans is incredible, no other animal can compare. They do read human emotion, I am completely convinced of that , our dog knows when anyone in the house is unwell or down and follows them specifically at those times, its quite uncanny.

You don’t know - you are making an assumption. That, of course is up to you.
For what it’s worth I don’t think I could be hilariously edgy if I tried.

This kind of discussion has done the rounds in philosophy for years.

And, the world doesn’t revolve around what you do when you have your dog - its a general discussion.
You will be aware that many use kennels, many train their dogs by hitting them, many train them to stop barking by hitting them and the vast majority cut their bits off.
