Do you remember when Robbo tried to sign Robbie Fowler?

I remember stories about us trying to sign René Houseman just after the 1978 World Cup. I don't think anyone ever took it that seriously.

always felt like Fowler was 'peak Leeds' under Risdale.
IIRC they didn't particularly need him......just saw him as a nice addition.
Saw this as peak profligacy.
Can't remember how it all turned out.....I know in the longer term it turned to :poop: but not sure how he actually performed.
Think he was already on the way down?
He was suffering with that hip injury and was half the player at Leeds and then at Manchester City.

I remember we’d all but signed Michele Padovano in 98 but pulled out last minute because his agent wanted a chunk of money. Think he signed for Palace the next day.
Robbo was trying to get Dean Holdsworth for ages at the start of that season but he ended up going to Bolton. I think we were trying for Lee Hughes as well, for around £5m. And this was when it looked like we had a teenage Robbie Keane in the bag only for Coventry to gazump us at the death. Strachan, no less. Remember when Robbie Keane went to Inter Milan not long after that?

Mentions Crozer in one of the articles. He did so well for us. And lost his place the minute Schwarz came back from injury. Loads of of rumours flying about at the time that Shwarz had a clause in his contract that he must play if fit. Can imagine it to be honest, when he signed a new deal.
Wow I had no idea McClaren wanted him as well. The rumours I was thinking of definitely predated that. I always thought McClaren was an Emile Heskey man. He was after him for ages. And Muzzy Izzet.

We seemed to be trying to sign Dani from Barcelona for ages aswell if memory serves me right.
There was one issue of the Gazette with ‘Boro’s triple Barca swoop’ on it. Might even have been front page. Robbo wanted Dani, Petit and Overmars(the two Arsènal players hadn’t settled in Spain). Think we ended up with Brian Deane and Keith O’Neill.

Was it Robbo or Lennie who tried to sign Alan Smith from Arsènal? Think he decided to retire instead. Heard a good interview with him years ago when he said he essentially lost his confidence when George Graham signed Ian Wright.
