Do you remember when Robbo tried to sign Robbie Fowler?

This was peak Fowler, pre-hip injury and before he went to Leeds United. It was all over the Sunday papers at one point, must’ve been 1998 or so when we were going up into the Premier League. Does anyone remember seeing it in the papers or hearing the rumours? £12m was what I heard at the time. I spent a long part of the summer convinced he was coming to Boro.

You see articles in the Gazette every now and then - less so now Vic and Tallentire have gone - about Batistuta or Dani or David Platt or Lineker. But none on Fowler. Definitely remember the rumours though.
 
I remember Steve Mcmanaman being courted by Robbo before he scruffy one deciding Teesside wasn't for him.
Not as sure about Robbie Fowler

Kanchelskis had to choose between Boro and Everton and chose Everton because he didn’t have to move house, apparently. I remember being gutted we didn’t get him. Likewise Moriero in the summer of ‘98. The deal was agreed but he had to decide, I remember checking Teletext constantly and it was there on P145 or the equivalent. Moriero decides against Boro move.

Definitely remember the McManaman links. Robbo wanted him for years. How about Ibrahima Ba? That was in the offing for ages, and pretty much done at one point. That’s what was in the paper. I remember waiting for confirmation on holiday in Salou, but it never came.

I miss the broadsheet Gazette.
 
I can't remember us ever being linked to Fowler back in the day and I'm pretty certain I would have remembered if we had of been.

Those were the days! My Dad told me to enjoy it at the time as we would probably never see the like again. How right he was 👍
 
always felt like Fowler was 'peak Leeds' under Risdale.
IIRC they didn't particularly need him......just saw him as a nice addition.
Saw this as peak profligacy.
Can't remember how it all turned out.....I know in the longer term it turned to :poop: but not sure how he actually performed.
Think he was already on the way down?
 
Yeah he was already crocked by then, lost his sharpness.

They peaked with the likes of Dacourt, Bridges, Kewell, Viduka, Bowyer etc…then started splashing cash on Fowler, Jason Wilcox and Seth Johnson

Mentions Crozer in one of the articles. He did so well for us. And lost his place the minute Schwarz came back from injury. Loads of of rumours flying about at the time that Shwarz had a clause in his contract that he must play if fit. Can imagine it to be honest, when he signed a new deal.

Wow, £15M bid. That must be paper talk. I can't see that we would have been spending that much at that time.
