Why don’t the likes of Andy Townsend ( parlour ince) never get mentioned as ex Boro players in all time boro XI

I seem to remember Chris Kamara playing for us too, I must have been young as I thought who the hell is that old bloke and why is he even getting a game, I’m better than him.
He played 5 games on loan..... it was a Gibson favour to him as he was a Boro lad who’d known Gibson all his life

I aLeary’s remember kammys dad saying he’d never play for bor, I think just after he’d signed for Leeds... his dad was a docker at teesport and at the time seemed to have something against the boro...

I remember reading him talk about the transfer and hearing we were after him and he told his agent there was no way he was going to Middlesbrough.

Then he saw what we were offering and he was amazed and got straight on the train.

He came for the money, however like someone mentioned I don' think it can be denied that when he played, he gave his all and was a good pro and you can't really as for anymore than that.

Townsend was captain at times wasn't he? He played much better than the likes of Gascoigne.

He's certainly not a Boro great but didn't let anyone down including himself.

He was quite an important figure in the 1997-98 promotion season and did well for us.
We are not his big club and he rarely ever speaks fondly of us, but he did a job nd was much more significant than the Romford Pele.
Parlour did some great work in midfield in the early European games, I certainly have better memories of his control and distribution than anything Townsend did, just here over the money though.

technically, yes as he was a Boro player, but he was never a player I got too excited about or had any real connection to either during or after his stint here.

To my knowledge he has never been disparaging about the club or the area, so on the whole I am fairly ambivalent towards him.

Yes of course he played for us but if I think of ex Boro players I must admit I just think of hendrie slaven even boatengs etc I don’t really picture Townsend.

I doubt he even classes himself as an ex Boro player same with Ray parlour as you get the feeling players like that were just passing through we were just a pay check to tide them over.

I’m posting this after he was on talk sport earlier and when asked where he was in 1999 he said he was winding down his career at either us or west Brom. But it was quite dismiss and think that’s how these players must see us and other sides like us.
Yes, absolutely, he was great for us. Have lots of good memories of him, set a real standard.

My post wasn’t about was he an ex Boro player... as of course he was

but more about how he never seems to be mentioned in our top mf posts or name a top Boro xI sides etc that’s my point where as lesser players ( or less illustrious careered players) like a Robbie mustoe etc are.

well he was never a star player, and wasn't a long term servent like Robbie. A good player though.

Does anyone remember that game at Ipswich where he should've been sent off but the ref bizzarely gave Craig Harrison the red card by mistake? Harrison was about to protest and Townsend just ushered him off the pitch...
