Why don’t the likes of Andy Townsend ( parlour ince) never get mentioned as ex Boro players in all time boro XI

Yes of course he played for us but if I think of ex Boro players I must admit I just think of hendrie slaven even boatengs etc I don’t really picture Townsend.

I doubt he even classes himself as an ex Boro player same with Ray parlour as you get the feeling players like that were just passing through we were just a pay check to tide them over.

I’m posting this after he was on talk sport earlier and when asked where he was in 1999 he said he was winding down his career at either us or west Brom. But it was quite dismiss and think that’s how these players must see us and other sides like us.

He was quite an important figure in the 1997-98 promotion season and did well for us.
We are not his big club and he rarely ever speaks fondly of us, but he did a job nd was much more significant than the Romford Pele.

I seem to remember Chris Kamara playing for us too, I must have been young as I thought who the hell is that old bloke and why is he even getting a game, I’m better than him.

Pay cheque... Have you moved to the USA?

Of course they do, why would he really care about the area?
It's just a job in many cases.

I regard him as an ex boro player cos I couldn’t give a stuff what he did for Villa or Chelsea etc. No doubt the neutrals will probably remember the player’s most high profile spell.

It's that sort of attitude and almost dismissive lack of respect from Townsend that annoys me. After all we paid his no doubt inflated wages for a few years.

I seem to remember he was in the studio when we played the UEFA cup final and when I watched it back when I got home he just got into us and almost seemed to enjoy the defeat. There was no affection or any acknowledgement that he had ever played for the club.

You're right, over the years on other occasions I've personally never heard him speak particularly fondly of his time here and perhaps as others have said he did just view it as a job and one last big money spinner (like many players do).

I suppose thinking about it why should we expect players to feel the same emotional connection and buy into the club that we have as fans. It's nice when it happens (e.g Bernie, Juninho, Boateng etc). However at the end of the day its largely a job for them in a short career and many look to maximise their income.

I liked Townsend as a player and he was good for us at the time, but I wouldn't say he's a player that I have really great memories of watching.
