Do we need Clayton back in the side?

He has critics but I've just been looking back to when our good run of form began.

We lost 4-0 away at Leeds. Clayton didn't feature, but came into the side for Charlton and we won 1-0.

We took 17 points from a possible 24, with Clayton starting every game aside from the 2-2 draw with Derby, and 1-0 win over Huddersfield.

Clayton also started in the cup game vs Spurs, and I remember him having an excellent game.

I've always said he's undervalued. He breaks up the play and brings a bit of composure to the midfield.

Its clear that he has been give the role of defending a 1-0 lead as a sub. May be some time before we see him.

Clayton has now played in 7 of our 9 wins this season.

I think it again shows just what an important player he is for us. We've essentially been playing without a holding midfielder whilst Clayton has been out of the side.

He's exactly the type of player we need in the team whilst we're scrapping for our lives, and I just hope Woodgate keeps him in the side for the remainder of the season.

Absolutely this 👍

It’s been the same for some time for me. Gets loads of criticism but ought to be one of the first names on the team sheet.

You, me, Indeedido and a few others have been saying it all along adi (Comeonboro will love this post btw) but its true. Him sitting in allows the likes of Paddy or Saville to get forward and get the odd vital goal while protecting the defence.

There I said it  :D

Depends on what formation Woodgate wants to play. 4231 and there is no better in the league. If you try to play him in a 3 the indiscipline of the other 2 leaves him exposed as he is not blessed with pace.

It just means then that he has to sit a bit deeper, to the point where he is almost playing as a third CB.

The goal we conceded against Luton is an example of how much we miss somebody like Clayton when he's out of the team.

Watch from 26 seconds. Savilles' positioning is all wrong. It's likely Clayton would have occupied the space just in front of the two CB's, and would have probably stopped their player in his tracks, after he managed to get away from Friend.
