Do we need a star name

Ok, but that's Beck. Those other 25-30 clubs probably weren't that much above our level. Beck was relatively highly rated before we got him but make no mistake, if one of the top Italian clubs had come in for him he was going there regardless of Robbo.

The likes of Ravanelli could have easily gone to bigger clubs than Boro, but we increased his wages from £7k to £42k a week, for a player who didn't start every week at Juventus and had only started only three or four times for Italy. He couldn't believe his luck, but of course some players want to sell the idea to fans that they're not just interested in money. Some of them aren't, but Ravanelli and Merson certainly were!
And Juno ???

You don’t think Robbo helped there

No we don't need a star name, we just need someone who knows what they are doing and hopefully plays good football

I left him out of that final sentence because he came here three times. I don't believe the second and third occasions were hugely motivated by money. The first time I think probably was. Robbo was a big name in football but in truth I don't think Juninho would have been more swayed by the England captain than he would have been by Johan Cruyff or whoever else could have also signed him had they gone in for him.

My honest, objective opinion is that we were the highest bidder at the time, and he liked the attention Robbo gave him so he chose us rather than waiting for the other clubs to get their acts together and counter offer (Inter/Arsenal/Parma etc).

I truly believe that Rav would have signed if Barry Fry was our manager.

I think you’re under estimating how big a name Bryan Robson was is globally.
I really don't think I am, he was a big name but its not as if Juninho grew up watching him week in week out, how often would England or Man Utd be televised in Brazil? World Cups, maybe a handful of other occasions (Robbo missed most of 86). Juninho idolised the likes of Zico and Socrates, Muller/Careca/Dunga etc. He'll have been well aware who Bryan Robson was but the idea that he grew up on the streets of Sao Paolo dreaming of playing under Bryan Robson doesn't sound all that realistic to me when you think about it. There's a lot of PR involved when players sign for clubs. I think we stumped up the most cash, and that's the main reason he signed for us (even if knowing who Robbo was helped in some way).

But we've discussed this before and I don't think we'll change each other's minds.

I think that most important factor is that the new coach/manager buys in to the concept that we are trying to implement of DoF and coach rather than the old school manager who does the recruitment, picks the team, et al.

I know that there is the predictable cry of "sack the recruitment team", but I believe that we need to give this new model time to settle in, otherwise we will be doomed to lurch from one "way of playing" to another with the same "annual" turnover of players and staff. I think it is a model worth persevering with.

Pretty much what I said on another thread. Whoever it is has to accept its not a traditional managerial gig here anymore.

To go back to the original question, I don't know if we *need* a star man as we don't have the money to back him like we backed Robbo anyway, he can have all the contacts in the world but if we can't afford the fees/wages, and the DoF doesn't believe they fit the strategy, its kind of pointless.
