Djed Spence only Spurs interested ??

Despite there being lots of rumours at the end of last season about lots of clubs in England and abroad being keen to sign Djed Spence the Gazzette reported last week that "Spurs were ultimately the only side in the running to sign the right-back".
There is no doubt that Spence is a talented player so it seems odd that only Spurs were keen to sign him, more notable was that Forrest did not make an offer.
I know questions were raised about his attitude but why would only one club be interested in signing him when it was obvious to everyone he wanted to leave Boro and Boro were keen to sell?.

Because he made clear it was the only place he wanted to go so others didn't come in for him.

Because the player himself made it clear it was Spurs he wanted and therefore the Agent focussed solely on them I presume.

I think it's more that they were his only Premier League option, so ultimately could be his only choice, so they framed that as his preference.

There's no way on earth other teams wouldn't have made a call or a bid if they were interested, especially with how long this was dragged out for, they could have done that Months ago.

Spurs wouldn't have been his all or nothing either, no matter what he says, if we rejected their bid and accepted another, who would practically guarantee him game time he would have had to go, and been advised to go by his agent. He wasn't going to wait here for two years on crap pay, so he could go to Spurs on a free, as they may not have even wanted him by then.

Even if he said he wanted to go to Spurs, if other sides wanted him then they'd have surely made an attempt to convince him otherwise.

I think a combination of things put other sides off. Firstly, any side who don't play with wing backs wouldn't have been interested. Doesn't defend well enough to be a right back, not good enough going forward to be a winger. Secondly, he's only performed well consistently for one season so he's still a risk. Thirdly, questions over his attitude. And finally, Boro weren't willing to sell on the cheap. If we wanted 5 or 6 mil less then other sides would probably have been willing to take a risk. At £12.5 + add ons, I'm not surprised that only a champions league side was actually seriously in for him.

I wish him well. One because why would you hope he fails, he’s only doing what most players have done in the past, all want to be at the biggest club. Who in the right mind would go to forest or stay at Boro if spurs are in for them.

Also he does well at spurs Boro could get more cash. It’s not as if he’s left us in the lurch. We’ve had his replacement sorted before he even left

Good luck to him and help us get more cash

spurs are doing to Boro what Boro have done to Northampton or whoever else. You can’t blame him wanting to better himself if we go for players in league 1 and just taking the ‘better himself’ for granted.

Its called the law of the jungle - we take from a smaller animal and a bigger one takes from us. The key is getting a decent price when you hand something over and keeping the production line going we decent finds/developments.

Tremendous business when Spurs knew they were the only real suitors and still shelled out that much.

We just need to find one player who dislikes us and makes us this profit margin every season and then Mr Gibson can pull out and retire knowing that everything's taken care of. 👍

We got as far as discussing a fee with Forest, given they had already paid a pretty sizable loan fee to secure him post-Xmas.

Not sure about the strength of other interest, but he obviously made it clear to Forest he wasn't interested in going there.

I think it’s to due to several factors:

1. He has only shown promise as a wingback. I believe there are doubts regarding his ability to play as a full back.

2. Not many teams play with wingbacks.

3. The probably question marks regarding his character.

Further to point two, how many prem teams play with wingbacks?
Chelsea (who have James, even if Chelsea wanted to sign him he’d know he doesn’t have a chance of playing instead of James).
Spurs (who’ve signed him).
Brighton (who have Lamptey, again Spence would have little chance of playing ahead of Lamptey).
Wolves.
Brentford.
Forest.

Probably 1 or 2 more but obvs majority of teams play with 4 at the back.

Yeh to be fair, managers aren’t guaranteed to be in the job in the next 3-4 years so why would they want to sign young players who aren’t going to be nailed on starters. They will want players ready now, not in the next few years so these type of signings I dare say are never the manager. More so the clubs choice, who makes that choice I don’t know but probably the sporting director.

I’d be p-ssed off being a manager and the club are signing players that you probably have no intentions of playing, just yet, anyway
